Barnes Genealogy - PA, NC
Welcome to my Barnes genealogy pages. I am interested in the Barnes families primarily of Chester Co., PA and central and western North Carolina. (I have another, unrelated Barnes line from Marion Co., SC.)
Barnes was the 99th most common surname in the United States in 2000, and 110th in 2010.
My most recent Barnes ancestor is my seven times great grandmother, Mary Barnes, born 1734 in Chester Co., PA. She married Samuel Carter in PA in 1756. They moved to North Carolina after that. They were Quakers. He died in Chatham Co., NC in 1804. She died, same place, in 1823. Her parents, as named in Quaker records:
Brinsley Barnes, born probably in the early 1710s, married Elizabeth (—) ca 1730s in Chester Co., PA. He died in Wilkes Co., NC ca 1794. She died sometime after 1788.
Brinsley’s parents are not known. William Barnes (d 1731) who also lived in Kennett Township of Chester Co., PA is a suspect. Others claim it’s a James Barnes who did in fact have a son named Brinsley Barnes, baptized 1713 in Ireland. However, Barnes researchers are hesitant to claim that one as ours despite the similar age and name. He does look promising though.
I was first introduced to this family by a cousin via the Carter family and referred to the book: The ancestry and descendants of Robert Bruce and Catherine Cearley: Including the Bruce, Cearley, Barnes, Lowdermilk and Voncannon families, by Lawrence L. Little, Floyd S. Radis, 1989.
