Daniel Brown’s in PA, VA, NC and elsewhere in the 1700s - Differentiation

[Brown Home] - [Table of Contents] - Differentiation between the various Daniel Brown’s, particularly those who were Quakers.

My ancestor Daniel Brown (c1720-1791) was in Augusta Co., VA in the 1740s, married 1st to someone unknown, and 2nd to Grace Thompson in 1750 in NJ while still a resident of VA. He moved from Augusta Co., VA to Orange (now Randolph) Co., NC by 1760. He died in Randolph Co., NC in 1791.

I’ve researched as many records as I could find for anyone named Daniel Brown of the same era and area as mine in hopes of differentiating them or finding more on my own. There were several Daniels in the records. There may be others not listed below that I didn’t discover yet. I mainly focused on Quaker families since my Daniel was a Quaker, at least from 1760 onward.

Pennsylvania | Virginia | North Carolina

Pennsylvania

Daniel Brown (bef 1700-aft 1765) and Elizabeth Kirk of Chester Co., PA. Son of James Brown (d 1715/16). Quakers.

Daniel Brown (c1700-1767) and Susannah Oldham of Chester Co., PA. Son of William Brown and Hester Baker. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (d aft 1774) and Susannah Elgar (m 1753) of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co., VA. Parents unidentified. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (bef 1741-aft 1772) and Miriam Gregg (m 1759) of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co., VA. Son of Daniel Brown and Elizabeth Kirk. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (aft 1753-aft 1774) of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co.,VA. Son of Daniel Brown and Susannah Elgar. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (1770-) son of Daniel Brown (Jr) and Miriam Gregg of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co., VA. Quakers.

Virginia

Daniel Brown in Orange Co., VA court Nov. 1745 asking to be exempted from taxes due to being aged and infirm. If we assume he was at least 65, he was born ca 1680 or earlier, thus unlikely to be confused with my Daniel (c1720-1791).

Daniel Brown (c1720-1791) and 1) Unknown, 2) Grace Thompson (m 1750) of Augusta Co., VA, Orange and Randolph Co., NC. Son of Henry Brown (d 1757). My ancestors. Daniel became a Quaker in 1760, though it appears he was not raised as one.

Daniel Brown (c1720-1797) and wife Elizabeth Rudd of Henrico and Chesterfield and Bedford Co., VA. Son of William Brown who died after 1736 in Henrico Co., VA. Daniel was in Henrico in 1730s and 1740s. Made deed to his brothers George Brown 1746 and Alexander Brown the same date. Their section became Chesterfield County.

In 1759 Avis Rudd made a Will in Chesterfield and named her “grandson son Daniel Brown.” The way it is worded makes it appear the grandson’s name was left out. I think she was the widow of John Rudd. In May 1760, heirs of John Rudd were named as Thomas Rudd, Joseph Rudd, James Rudd, John Rudd, Daniel Brown, Alexander Brown and William Rudd. This suggests that Daniel Brown’s wife Elizabeth, and Alexander’s wife were sisters, and daughters of John Rudd. Daniel Brown was in the Chesterfield records 1760s through 1771 (court records after that as well). Went to Bedford Co., VA by 1773. Left a Will in Bedford in 1797 as Daniel Brown Sr. His son Daniel Brown “Junr” was deeded land in Bedford in 1779 by Samuel Morgan. Jane Brown was a witness to that deed. See below for more on Daniel Jr.

Daniel Brown (bef 1736-aft 1761) of Chesterfield Co., VA. In 1756 Francis Brown made a deed of gift to his “sons” Daniel Brown and Linard Brown. This Daniel was in Cumberland Co., VA by 1761.

Daniel Brown and wife Jane of Henrico Co., VA. This Daniel made his Will in 1785 naming wife Jane, sons William, John and Daniel Brown. William Brown and Daniel Brown made Executors, meaning they were both 21 or older then, so this Daniel (Jr) was born before ca 1764.

Daniel Brown (Jr) (bef 1748-aft 1832) and wife Lucy, son of Daniel Brown (c1720-1797) and Elizabeth Rudd. Was in Bedford Co., VA through 1804, then in Pittsylvania Co., VA by 1805, there for several years, then in Campbell Co., VA by 1832.

Daniel Brown (d aft 1774) and Susannah Elgar (m 1753) of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co., VA. Parents unidentified. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (bef 1741-aft 1772) and Miriam Gregg (m 1759) of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co., VA. Son of Daniel Brown and Elizabeth Kirk. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (aft 1753-aft 1774) of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co.,VA. Son of Daniel Brown and Susannah Elgar. Quakers.

Daniel Brown (1770-) son of Daniel Brown (Jr) and Miriam Gregg of Chester Co., PA and Frederick Co., VA. Quakers.

North Carolina

Daniel Brown (c1720-1791) and 1) Unknown, 2) Grace Thompson (m 1750) of Augusta Co., VA, Orange and Randolph Co., NC. Probably a son of Henry Brown (d 1757). Quakers. My ancestors.

Daniel Brown (bef 1767-aft 1803) of Randolph and Wilkes Co., NC. Son of Daniel Brown and Grace Thompson.

Daniel Brown (bef 1744-1811) and wife Lucy was in Chatham Co., NC in 1765 (while still part of Orange), through his death in 1811. Lived on or near Bear Creek. Had children: Daniel Brown Jr, Mary Landrum wife of Benjamin, Betsy Harper wife of William, Avis Powell wife of John, Delphy Kelly wife of William, Linas Brown, Archy Brown, John Brown, Neill Brown, and George Brown. The daughter named “Avis” makes me think this is Daniel son of Daniel Brown and Elizabeth Rudd of Henrico, Chesterfield and Bedford Co., VA. Elizabeth Rudd’s mother was named Avis. Could be coincidence though, as that Daniel Jr (s/o Daniel & Elizabeth) had a proven son named Shadrack Brown. Daniel of Chatham Co., NC did not.
