I (Marty Grant) am not related to Abner Bryson as far as I know, but I am very interested in this family.
Abner Bryson was born 23 Jan 1770 either in Virginia or in North Carolina. If Virginia, then in Orange County, if North Carolina, then in Rowan County, in the section that became Surry County in 1771. He is a proven son of James and Catherine Bryson of Surry Co, NC. He was named in James' Bible record as his son, and his birth date (above) was given there as well.
Abner Bryson was probably home with his parents for the 1786 census in Surry Co, NC. He would have been 16 years old, and James had 6 sons under 21 (born ca 1765/1786) with him for that census.
On 15 May 1787, an "A. B. Bryson" witnessed a Surry Co, NC Deed between James Doak of Guilford Co, NC to Thomas Chamberlain Sr for land on the West side of Pauls Creek. James Bryson (Abner's father) and Henry Herring were also witnesses. I am not sure if "A. B." is Abner, but he could be. Abner would have only been 17 then, so this might not be him. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 338 from Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com)
Abner was probably home with his parents for the 1790 census, as he was only 20 then. James Bryson did have 3 males over age 16 (born before 1774) for the 1790 census.
Sometime between 1790 and 1800 (probably very close to 1800), Abner Bryson married Nancy Whitlock in Surry Co, NC. I do not have a primary source for her name. I did not find a marriage record in Surry County. Bill Lindsey shared her name with me, stating that her family was also from Montgomery Co, VA originally. Apparently her father Thomas' Will (22 Jan 1824 in Cumberland Co, KY) names his daughter "Nancy Bryson", and other records in KY prove that she was Abner's wife.
Abner Bryson was listed on the 1800 census in Surry Co, NC. He and his wife had no children, so perhaps they were just married.
1800 census analysis (based on available evidence):
1800 Surry Co, NC pg 638 Abner Bryson 00010-00100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) Abner BRYSON (1770) s/o James 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Nancy WHITLOCK Bryson (1774/84) wife
Abner Bryson and family moved to Cumberland Co, KY before 1810. They were listed on that census there.
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence):
1810 Cumberland Co, KY pg 1806 Abner Bryson 10020-30010 Analysis: 2 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Abner BRYSON (1770) s/o James Brother? I have not researched this family in Kentucky at all, so my data on them ends at this time. I did note that Abner Bryson was listed on the 1820 and 1830 census in Cumberland Co, KY.
Abner Bryson and wife Nancy Whitlock probably had several children, at least per the 1810 census. I have not researched this family enough to know who any of the children were.
