I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 6 times removed of Andrew Bryson.

Andrew Bryson was born ca 1815/16 in SC (possibly in Pendleton District). He is possibly a son of James Nail Bryson and Ann Gross, but I have no proof of that.

None of the early Bryson Histories mentioned this family.

Ethel Updike included Andrew Bryson as a son of James Nail Bryson in her book: Armstrong, Branyon, Bryson and Allied Families of the South (1967) on page 140 (See my commentary on that book). She listed him "born ca 1822", but had nothing else on him.

Lawrence Wood also included Andrew Bryson as a child of James Nail Bryson in his book: Bryson Family of Western North Carolina 1664 to 1980 (1981) on page 140 (See my commentary on that book). He had no additional data, other than his name. When I spoke to him a few years about this Andrew Bryson (c1816) and wife Lydia in Union Co, GA in 1850, he told me that he was fairly sure that it was this same Andrew.

In the 1820 and 1830 census, James Nail Bryson had a son with him who was the right age to be Andrew, so that helps a little to confirm that is where he belongs.

Andrew Bryson married Lydia --- ca 1835 or so, in Haywood Co, NC probably in the Caney Fork region (now Jackson County). The LDS Ancestral File shows that Lydia is a Berrong, and a sister of Susanna Berrong who married Thomas Bryson (brother of Andrew). I don't know if this is accurate or not, but it could be. Henry Berrong is the father. Since Andrew and Lydia named a son "Henry" this could be correct. The submitter of that data as Elizabeth J. Hunkele of Weatherford, TX.

Mary, widow of Henry Berrong, was listed next door to Andrew Bryson and Lydia on the 1850 census, so this seems to be correct.

Andrew Bryson was listed on the 1840 census in Haywood Co, NC just two houses from his father James N. Bryson, and next to his brother Thomas Bryson.

Andrew Bryson and family moved to Union Co, GA around this time, and before ca 1841. They were listed on the 1850 census in Union Co, GA. Based on his neighbors, I believe he was in the section of Union County that became Towns County in 1856. Lydia's supposed mother Mary Berrong was listed next door.

Although this region of Union County became Towns County in 1856, Andrew and family might not have been there then. They had moved to nearby Whitfield County, GA before 1860.

Children

Andrew and Lydia's children (as I have listed) are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census.
