I (Marty Grant) am not related to Archibald Bryson as far as I know, but I am very interested in this family.

Archibald Bryson was born ca 1773 or before, assuming he was at least 21 when his first public record was made (in 1794). He may have been born in Surry Co, NC, or possibly in Virginia. I don't know who Archibald's parents are, but I suspect he is a son of John Bryson Jr and Esther Joyce, but have no conclusive proof of that. At this time, they are the only possible suspects, as far as I can see.

Archibald Bryson probably came to Surry Co, NC with his parents in the 1770's.

Archibald was not listed on the 1786 census in Surry Co, NC, but his suspected father, John Bryson Jr, did have 2 sons under 21 (born ca 1765/1786) with him. One of these could easily be Archibald.

Archibald Bryson was not listed on the 1790 census in Surry Co, NC, but, as in 1786, his suspected father, John Bryson Jr, did have room for him in his household, with 2 males under 16 (born ca 1774/1790). If Archibald were born ca 1773, then this doesn't quite fit, but it is close.

On 12 Nov 1794 Archibald Bryson witnessed a deed from Patrick Coyle of Bedford Co, VA to John Bryson Jr (Arch's suspected father) for land on both sides of Lovings Creek. Other witnesses were Christopher Rowles and Francis Bryson (Don't know if this is John Jr's sister or a man of that name). (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 315 from Surry County, North Carolina Deeds Books D, E and F 1779-1797 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com)

The above deed is one of the reasons I think that Archibald is a son of John Jr, since he witnessed a deed of his. Another is that John Bryson Jr did have two sons approximately Arch's age, who are otherwise unidentified.

Archibald Bryson was not listed on the 1800 census, at least not in Surry Co, NC. He may have been at home with his parents, as John Bryson Jr did have a son age 16-25 (born ca 1774/84) which might be Archibald.

Archibald Bryson was not listed on the 1810 census, at least not in Surry Co, NC. I didn't find him elsewhere in 1810 either. If he was unmarried, he might have been living with another family, as a hired hand or something.

On 7 Feb 1815 Arch Bryson witnessed a deed where Ann Bryson (Arch's unmarried Aunt) sold Alexander Bryson (Arch's Uncle) a Negro boy named "Tom". . (Surry Co, NC Deed Book N page 433, thanks to Florence Bryson for sharing this with me)

The above was the last record I found for Archibald Bryson. If he left the state after 1794, he came back at least once in 1815. I don't know where he was in the meantime, nor afterwards.

I did find an Archibald Bryson listed on the 1830 census in Wythe Co, VA. This is not far from Surry Co, NC, so this might be the same person. More research is needed.

Children

At this time, I don't even know if Archibald Bryson ever married.
