I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 6 times removed to Daniel Bryson.

Daniel Bryson was born ca 1823/24 in NC, possibly on or near Scotts Creek in Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson), or perhaps on Sugar Fork Creek in Macon Co, NC (then still part of Haywood). He is possibly a son of James Bryson and Rebecca Poston. I don't know of any proof of this relationship though.

None of the early Bryson Histories mention this family.

Ethel Updike included Daniel Bryson as a son of James and Rebecca in her book: Armstrong, Branyon, Bryson and Allied Families of the South (1967) on page 137 (See my commentary on that book). She offered no proof that Daniel was their son, but she listed his wife as "Nancy ?" so I'm sure it this same Daniel she was referring to. She had no additional data on Daniel Bryson.

Lawrence Wood also included Daniel as a child of James and Rebecca in his book: Bryson Family of Western North Carolina 1664 to 1980 (1981) on page 57 (See my commentary on that book). He had no additional data on Daniel except that he married Nancy Stephens.

Daniel's supposed parents, James and Rebecca, were in Macon Co, NC in 1830, probably living on Sugar Fork. They had a son Daniel's age with them (who is otherwise unclaimed, so it could be him). James and Rebecca left Macon Co, NC for Habersham Co, GA during the late 1830's. They were listed there on the 1840 census. They had a son close to Daniel's age with them at that time.

Daniel Bryson married Nancy Stephens (maiden name per L. Wood, page 57) between 1840 and 1844 in Habersham or Union Co, GA (no record found in Union, I didn't look in Habersham).

Daniel and family were listed in Union Co, GA for the 1850 census. They apparently resided in the section of Union County that soon became Towns County (in 1856). There were other Brysons in this county at that time, but none listed close by. Henderson Poston age 37 was two houses away. He is probably a close relative of Daniel's mother Rebecca Poston Bryson. There were several Stephens families in this county in 1850, but none listed close to them.

In 1856 the section of Union County where they lived (and part of Rabun county) was cut off to form Towns County. They were found in that county for the 1860 census.

Apparently Daniel Bryson died during the 1860's, perhaps in Civil War service. His widow Nancy Stephens Bryson apparently married Willis Ellis during the same time frame. They were listed on the 1870 census in Towns Co, GA.

I didn't find this family in 1880 Towns Co, GA, though the microfilm of this was very dim and hard to read. I did find Sumner Bryson and his wife Emma, listed in Brasstown District.

I currently have no additional data on Daniel and Nancy's children, other than their son Sumner who married Emma ca 1880.
