I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 6 times removed to George Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their books on the Bryson family, including information on this particular branch of the family.
George Bryson was born ca 1816/17 (per 1850 census), probably in Buncombe (now Henderson) Co, NC if his parents are correctly identified.
According to both Wood and Updike, George Bryson was a son of Joseph Bogle Bryson and Judith Allen of Buncombe (now Henderson) Co, NC. No proof of this connection is presented, but it seems reasonable, especially considering that George was living in Henderson County in 1840 before moving to Haywood County. I would be happier though if I could find some direct evidence linking George to Joseph B. Bryson. (George did name a son "Joseph"). Further evidence may be found in that Joseph's son Samuel C. Bryson moved to the same section of Haywood where George lived.
George would have been about 3 years old for the 1820 census. Joseph B. Bryson did have four sons "under 10" in 1820 (born ca 1810/20), one of them possibly George Bryson.
He would have been about 13 for the 1830 census. Joseph Bryson had an apparent son aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20) with him that years, possibly George.
In 1840, George was listed as head of household in Henderson Co, NC, apparently living alone. I'm not sure, but I think he was in the part of Henderson that later became Transylvania County, but I could be mistaken.

At some point in the 1840's, George moved into neighboring Haywood County. Several of his Bryson cousins were already in that county, but he did not live near any of them (they all lived in the section that later became Jackson County). I suspect that he moved there by ca 1842 when he apparently got married.
George Bryson married Ann Wood sometime before ca 1842, presumably in Haywood County. I found no marriage record for them, but both Wood and Updike gave her maiden name as "Wood" and that she was a daughter of Jonathan Wood.
George and family were listed on the 1850 census in Haywood County. They were not near any of the other Brysons. They were just two houses from Ann's parents.

Ann Wood Bryson died sometime before ca 1857, or before 1856.
There is a marriage bond for George Bryson and Violet Inmon dated 13 May 1856 in Haywood County. This must be the same George. But if it is him, then Violet died before 1857, for on 2 Sep 1857, George obtained another marriage bond in Haywood to marry Mary Ann Mahaffey. She was born 20 Jan 1829 (source?) in Tennessee, daughter of William Mahaffey and Elizabeth Snider.
George and family were listed on the 1860 census in Haywood County. Jonathan Wood (former father-in-law) had two Bryson children with him, probably George and Ann's. They were not listed near each other.

George Bryson died on 14 Aug 1869 according to an obituary that listed him as a miller, and that he died in the Flour Mill of Col. J. Cathey on Pigeon River. Mary and children were listed on the 1880 census in Haywood in Pigeon Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
George Bryson and wife Ann Wood had six children, and he and his 3rd wife Mary Ann Mahaffey had 5 children as proven by the various census records.
