I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 6 times removed to Hugh Burton Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their books on the Bryson family, including information on this particular branch of the family.
Hugh Burton Bryson was born 2 Jan 1828 (per Jonathan Bryson family Bible) in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know who he may have been named for.
Burton is a son of Jonathan M. Bryson (1798) and Demaris Griffin, as proven by their Family Bible.
Burton was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged "under 5" (born ca 1825/30).
In 1840, Burton was apparently home with his parents, aged 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).
On 28 Sep 1847, Hugh B. Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Elizabeth Angel. Elizabeth M. Angel was born ca 1829/30 in Macon Co, NC (both facts per 1850 census). I don't know who her parents were. There were several Angel families in Macon County in 1840, James, William, Alexander and Elizabeth. James and widow Elizabeth both had daughters about Elizabeth's age. Ethel Updike stated that Elizabeth's father was James Angel. I don't know what evidence she used.
Burton and family were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. They were not near any of the other Bryson households. Barbary Hefby (c1789 SC) was living with them. I don't know how (or if) she is related.

On 11 Mar 1852, a Performance Bond was posted for $4000 for H. B. Bryson to be Constable. Bondsman were H. B. Bryson, William H. Roan, J. M. Bryson (his father), William Tatham and J. B. Trammell. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 200from "Records of Macon County, N.C. 1849-1858 Deed Books F, G, H and I" Abstracted by Barbara Sears McRae, 1998. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "F" through "I" are taken from this book.)
On 15 Mar 1853 (for his second term), another Performance Bond was posted for H. B. Bryson, Constable: H. B. Bryson, T. J. Roan, Thomas W. Owens, Jacob B. Trammell, and J. M. Bryson (father), bondsmen. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 208)
On 16 Mar 1855 (fourth term? I didn't find one for 1854), H. B. Bryson was Constable again for another year. Bondsmen were H. B. Bryson, John Wilds, John B. Love, Jonathan M. Bryson (father), John Reid and Thomas J. Roan. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book I page 203)
They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon just a few houses from his brother William Bryson, in Franklin Township.

They were still in Macon for the 1870 census. There is an obvious error in this census, as daughter Charlotte is listed as age 40, and Elizabeth is not listed at all.

They apparently moved to Georgia before ca 1874, and then on to Phelps County, Missouri before 1880.
Hugh Burton Bryson died sometime between 1874 and 1880, though I don't know if in Georgia or Missouri.
Elizabeth and her children were listed on the 1880 census in Phelps County, Missouri in Cold Spring Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I have no data on them after this.
Hugh Burton Bryson and Elizabeth Angel had 10 children as proven by the various census records. I have very little additional data on them.
