I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Milly, Mary and Martha Campbell family. I am very interested in them though.

This family lived in Wahee Township of modern Marion County.

I am reasonably sure that these three ladies were sisters, but don't know who their parents were. I strongly suspect they were children of Dempsey Campbell, but my only proof is circumstantial, in that he had girls their age with him in the earlier census records (1820, 1830 and 1840).

None of the sisters appeared on a census before 1850. Girls their age are with Dempsey Campbell in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census.

Milly Campbell, the oldest, was born ca 1809/10 in Marion Dist, SC. In 1850 she was living by herself in Marion Dist, SC.

Her suspected sisters Mary and Martha were living together several pages away (you'll see later why I think they are sisters to Milly). Martha Campbell was born ca 1811/12 in Marion Dist, SC. Mary Campbell was born ca 1812/13 in Marion Dist, SC. Mary appears to be a single mother in 1850, with a 1 year old son named Robert Campbell, age 1. His race is listed as "M". (See my page on Ethnic origins for more on this subject.)

A few households away from Mary and Martha were two Campbell children living with another family. I believe these are also children of Mary or Martha (or even of Milly). I can't say who they belong to, but they are connected somehow.

By 1860 all three sisters were together in one household. Mary's (apparent) son Robert was still with them, though listed as "White" this time, and the two Campbell children from the Thompson household in 1850 were also with them. The sisters ages in 1860 don't agree with what they were listed as in 1850, but I'm sure it is them based on everything else.

Both William Campbell and Robert Campbell were listed on the "Roll of Company of Militia last called into service" from Marion County. These were typically very young or very old men called up near the end of the Civil war (1865). (History of Marion County, South Carolina, W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 644).

I didn't find any of these folks in the 1870 census. I don't know what became of them.

In 1880 I found Milly Campbell in Wahee Township living by herself. She was listed as "Single".

I didn't find any members of this family on the 1900 census in Marion County.

Children

Children of Mary Campbell are not quite proven, but suggested by the various census records.

Celia Campbell was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC. In 1850 she was residing with the Charlotte Thompson family. In 1860 she was with Mary, Milly and Martha Campbell. I didn't find her in 1870, so she had probably married (or died) by then.

William Campbell was born ca 1847/48 in Marion Dist, SC. In 1850 he was residing with the Charlotte Thompson family. In 1860 he was with Mary, Milly and Martha Campbell. Both William Campbell and his suspected brother Robert Campbell were listed on the "Roll of Company of Militia last called into service" from Marion County. These were typically very young or very old men called up near the end of the Civil war (1865). (History of Marion County, South Carolina, W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 644).

A William Campbell age 18 (born ca 1851/52) was listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Wahee township. He was single, but his race was listed as "M" (Mulatto). I don't know if that is the same William or not. Since his brother Robert had been listed as "M" in 1850, perhaps this is him. I can't say for sure. I didn't find William in the 1880 census.

Robert Campbell was born ca 1849/49 in Marion Dist, SC. In 1850 he was residing with Mary and Milly Campbell and still with them in 1860. Both Robert Campbell and his suspected brother William Campbell were listed on the "Roll of Company of Militia last called into service" from Marion County. These were typically very young or very old men called up near the end of the Civil war (1865). (History of Marion County, South Carolina, W.W. Sellers, 1902, page 644).

The 1850 census showed Robert's race as "M" (Mulatto), but 1860 and 1880 show him as "W" (White).

I didn't find Robert Campbell on the 1870 census, but I did find him on the 1880 census in Wahee Township living alone.
