I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Samuel A. Campbell family. I am very interested in him though.

Special thanks to Warren Wilkinson and Bob Garland for data shared on this family.

Samuel A. Campbell (Middle name "Armstrong" per Warren) was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion Dist, SC. He was a son of James Campbell and Elizabeth Wilson.

Samuel Campbell, while still single, was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC.

Samuel A. Campbell married Ann White ca 1830/33 in Marion Dist, SC. She was a daughter of Richard White.

Samuel was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. I couldn't quite tell what area he lived in by his neighbors. None of his neighbors in 1840 seemed to be his neighbors in 1850, so he might have moved during the 1840's.

Ann White Campbell died between 1845 and 1850 in Marion Dist, SC. During that same time frame, Samuel married Martha E. Thwing (maiden name per Bob Garland). They were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC, apparently in the area that was later called McMillan Township.

On 16 Nov 1850 Samuel A. Campbell made a claim against the estate of Richard White who died Feb 1845, for land on Lynches Creek including interest. He stated that one of Richard's heirs was Ann, late wife of Samuel Campbell, and that she died leaving children under 21, including: John C.C. Campbell, Mary E.F. Campbell, William D. Campbell, Margaret J.P. Campbell and James W. Campbell. (Roll # 195, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley)

On 6 Jan 1853 Samuel A. Campbell was again in the Equity records, but this time he was being sued by Mary Wilkenson, widow of Richard Wilkenson. Samuel A. Campbell was administrator of Richard's estate, and Mary, being the widow had not received any maintenance or anything. In a letter mentioned by Warren Wilkenson, Mary claimed that Samuel A. Campbell was her brother. (Roll # 300, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley)

Samuel and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. The only other nearby Campbell was his son William D. Campbell, who had married prior to 1860.

Children

Samuel A. Campbell's children by his first wife Ann White are proven by the Equity Records, and some by the 1850 census. His children by Martha Thwing are proven by census records.

John Caldwell Calhoun Campbell was born ca 1832/33 in Marion Dist, SC (in an area now part of Florence County). He was generally listed as "John C.C. Campbell" in the records. He was home with his parents in 1850 and 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. For the Civil War he was part of Company I, 6th Regiment Cavalry (per Sellers, page 631). John married Emma E. Gregg before 1866 in Marion Dist, SC. (Her maiden name per Bob Garland). They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in McMillan Township (modern Florence County).

In 1888, McMillan Township and other parts of Marion and neighboring counties were cut off to form the new County of Florence. This family was then in Florence County from 1888 on.

Mary E. F. Campbell was born ca 1830/35 or 1835/40 in Marion Dist, SC. She was named in the Equity records as a daughter of Samuel A. Campbell and Ann White. She wasn't at home for the 1850 census, so apparently had married (who?) by then. In 1840, there were two girls in the household, one born ca 1830/35, the other ca 1835/40. One of these may be Mary.

William D. Campbell was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC. He was at home with his parents in 1850. Between 1850 and 1860 he married someone with an initial of "A". (That is all that was given in 1860 for her). She was born in GA, and with the household was an "L. Lindberger", just slightly younger than her, also born in GA, so that may be her maiden name, if "L" is her little sister.

For the Civil War, William D. Campbell was part of Company I, 10th Regiment, Infantry. He was reported Wounded at Jonesboro, GA. (per Sellers page 641). I didn't find him in 1870.

Margaret J. Palmira Campbell was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC. She was at home with her parents in 1850 and 1860. I didn't find her in 1870, so she had probably married (who?) or died.

James W. Campbell was born ca 1844/45 in Marion Dist, SC. He was at home with his parents in 1850 and 1860. For the Civil War he was part of Company I, 6th Regiment Cavalry. He was reported wounded Fayetteville, NC. (per Sellers, page 631). He was still at home for the 1870 census. Sometime prior to 1880, he married Julia A ---. They were listed in Marion Co, SC in Cains Township (modern Florence County).

Southern Armstrong Campbell was born ca 1850 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with parents in 1860 and 1870 census. He married Alice Rosalee Ross (ca1870/75) per Bob Garland. This is his branch of the family. Thanks to Bob Garland for the rest of the data I have on this family, mainly the names of the children and who they married.

Southern and family were listed on the 1880 census in Cain Township. His widowed mother was with him.
