Carter Genealogy - PA, NC, GA
Welcome to my Carter genealogy pages. I am interested in the Carter families primarily of central and western North Carolina.
Carter was the 46th most common surname in the United States in 2000, and 49th in 2010.
My most recent Carter ancestor is my four times great grandmother, Nancy Matilda Carter, born 1814 in Buncombe Co., NC. She moved with her parents to Rabun Co., GA in the 1820s. She married William H. Cathey there in 1837. They lived in Union and Towns Co., GA until the 1860s when they moved to Jackson Co., NC (now Swain Co., NC) where they both died, he ca 1878, she in 1890. Nancy is a child of:
Jesse Carter, born 1784 in Randolph Co., NC. He went to Buncombe Co., NC with his parents by 1805. He married Lavina Sams there that very year. They remained in Buncombe until the 1820s when they moved to Rabun Co., GA where she died in 1856 and he in 1871. Jesse is a child of:
Edward Carter, born 1761 in Rockingham Co., VA. He came with his parents to central North Carolina, living perhaps in Orange, Chatham and Randolph Counties. He married Mary Brown in Randolph in 1781. They moved to Buncombe Co., NC between 1800 and 1805. They remained there until the 1820s when they moved to Rabun Co., GA where Mary died in 1833. Edward remarried in 1835 to Isabella Gross. Edward died in 1838, then Isabella remarried John Steel in 1841. Edward is a child of:
Samuel Carter, born 1733 in Chester Co., PA (now Delaware Co., PA). He married there ca 1756 to Mary Barnes. They were in North Carolina by 1763. Samuel died in 1802 in Chatham Co., NC. Mary died in the same county in 1823 (supposedly, but perhaps not).
Much of what I have before Samuel and Mary comes from the book Those Who Were and Would be Named Carter The First 300 Years in America (1682-1982), by Charles Marcus Liddell, II. 1982; 2 Volumes. I have been able to verify each generation from other records, so he did good work.
John Carter (1695-c1760) and Isabell Atkinson of Chester Co., PA (now Delaware Co., PA).
Robert Carter (c1665-1751) and Lydia Wally of Chester Co., PA (now Delaware Co., PA).
Edward Carter (c1640-c1703) and Margaret — (c1645-aft 1703) of Oxfordshire, England and Chester Co., PA.
