Archibald Cathey’s in the 1700s - Differentiation

There were several men named Archibald Cathey in America in the 1700s. They all appear to be part of the same extended family. Fortunately they’ve been fairly easy to keep straight.

There are 9 known Archibald Catheys born before 1800 in the list below (including one likely born in 1800). The first in the list might not have ever come to America, but I included him because Dr. E. Henry Cathey believes he is the same one who was in Pennsylvania.

1. Archibald Cathey and Johanna Cochrane, married ca late 1600s, Clones Parish, Monaghan, Ireland. This might be the same Archibald who died after 1733 in PA, but that isn’t proven.

2. Archibald Cathey died after 1733 PA (Lancaster).

3. Archibald Cathey (c1737-1777) of NC (Mecklenburg). Never married. Son of George Cathey Sr (c1692).

4. Archibald Cathey (c1755-1810) of SC (Union), NC (Burke).

5. Cpt. Archibald Cathey (1769-1811) and Mary Caldwell of NC (Mecklenburg). Son of John Cathey and Mary Henry.

6. Archibald Cathey (c1773-1823) and Nancy Sloan of NC (Mecklenburg), GA (Clarke) and TN (Bedford). Son of Andrew Cathey (1722-1786).

7. Archibald Cathey (1786-1819) of NC (Lincoln). Son of George Cathey (1756-1825).

8. Archibald Cathey (1790/1800-aft 1830) of TN (Bledsoe). Probably son of Samuel L. Cathey.

9. Archibald Cathey (c1799/1800) and Mary Ann — of GA, TN (Stewart) and AR (Izard).
