George Cathey’s in the 1700s - Differentiation

There were several men named George Cathey in America in the 1700s. They all appear to be part of the same extended family. Sorting them out has not been easy, however, we’ve made an effort and I think we have a pretty good handle on who was who for the most part.

There are 19 George Catheys born before 1790 in the list below. One or two of them might actually be the same person, but most are clearly distinct individuals.

1. George Cathey (c1692-c1759/65) and wife Jean (d 1777) of Rowan and Mecklenburg Co., NC. Parents unproven.

2. George Cathey died after 1734 Cecil Co., MD. This could be George (1692).

3. George Cathey (1724-1801) and wife Frances Henry of Rowan and Mecklenburg Co., NC. Proven son of George and Jean.

4. George Cathey (1725-1790) and wife Sarah (or Ann) Price and wife Margaret — of Anson, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Burke Co., NC. Son of James and Ann. This is my ancestor.

5. George Cathey (before 1742) of Lancaster Co., PA, proven son of John and Ann. Some believe this is the eldest George on the list, the one born ca 1692. That isn’t proven.

6. George Cathey (1747-bef 1820) of Louisiana, likely son of George and Sarah.

7. George Cathey (1755-1840) and Margaret Chambers, of Burke, Buncombe and Haywood Co., NC and Cooper Co., MO. Son of George Cathey (1725).

8. George Cathey (1756-1825) and wife Agnes Allen. of Mecklenburg and Lincoln Co., NC. Son of George and Frances.

9. George Cathey (c1750s-ca1798) and wife Christiana Smith of VA. Revolutionary War Soldier. May be part of Shenandoah Co., VA Catheys.

10. George Cathey married Mary Morrison 1779 in Lincoln Co., NC. Who is this George? Probably one of the men already listed here. Would have to be born ca 1761 or before.

11. George Cathey (1760/65-1840) of Mecklenburg Co., NC, Oglethorpe Co., GA, Williamson and Stewart Co., TN. Son of Andrew (1722-1786) son of George (1692).

12. George B. Cathey (1774-1828) and Sarah Rice of Buncombe and Haywood Co., NC. Son of William Cathey, son of George (1725).

13. George Cathey (c1775-1809) married Eleanor Cathey dau of Andrew (1722-1786). Of Stewart Co., TN. George’s parents unknown.

14. George Cathey (1775-1835) and Ellen, of Williamson Co., TN. Son of Josiah (1749-1778).

15. George Cathey (c1777-aft 1850) son of John Cathey (c1750-1781) and Esther Barber, of Mecklenburg Co., NC.

16. George Cathey (1784-1866) married Margaret Neill, granddaughter of George Cathey (1725). George (1784) is a son of Hugh Cathey. Of Bedford and Marshall Co., TN.

17. George Cathey (1787-1853) and Anna McFarland. Son of George Cathey (1755) and Margaret Chambers. Of Buncombe and Haywood Co., NC and Cooper Co., MO.

18. George W. Cathey (1784/94-1844) son of George Cathey (1747) of Louisiana.
