There were several men named William Cathey in America in the 1700s. They all appear to be part of the same extended family. Fortunately they’ve been fairly easy to keep straight for the most part.

1. William Cathey (bef 1713-aft 1763) of PA, VA and NC (Anson, Mecklenburg). Parents unknown.

2. William Cathey (bef 1720-bef 1751) of Augusta Co., VA. Never married. Son of James Cathey (d 1756/57).

3. William Cathey (1741-aft 1782) m Margery; of NC (Tryon, Lincoln). Son of Andrew Cathey (bef 1723-1758) son of James (d 1756/57).

4. William Cathey (1747-1799) m Alice Hagan; of NC (Rowan), TN (Sumner, Maury). Son of Alexander Cathey (c1707-1766).

5. William Cathey (1750/54-1812) m Rebecca Holeman; of NC (Burke, Buncombe, Haywood, Macon) and VA (Shenandoah). Son of George Cathey (~1725-1790).

6. William Cathey (1750/64-aft 1764) of NC (Rowan) son of John Cathey (d 1764).

7. William Cathey (bef 1762-aft 1826) and Margaret (—) Holeman (bef 1746-aft 1796) of VA (Shenandoah) and WV (Kanawha, Cabell). Probably son of John Cathey (bef 1727-aft 1773).

8. William Cathey (17??-aft 1805) m Elizabeth Cathey of TN (Sumner). Son of John Cathey (c1745-1823). She’s a daughter of William Cathey (1747-1799) and Alice Hagan.

9. Maj. William Cathey (1777-1864) m Catherine Turner; of NC (Buncombe, Haywood) and MO (Cooper). Son of George Cathey (1755-1840).

10. William Cathey (1779-1844) m Elizabeth Gale of TN (Sumner, Maury) and MS (Marshall). Son of William Cathey (1747-1799) and Alice Hagan.

11. William Cathey (1782-1850s) m Elizabeth Bryson; of NC (Buncombe, Haywood) and GA (Union, Towns). Son of William Cathey (1750/54-1812).
