I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand Nephew of Dempsey Collins.
Dempsey Collins was born before 1755, possibly in SC, or perhaps in another state.
I don't know who his parents might have been. He does have at least one proven brother in my ancestor Jonah Collins (1774).
He apparently resided near Flat Swamp (waters of Catfish Creek) according to several deeds.
Dempsey Collins married Mary --- before 1790, probably several years before. I don't know her maiden name.
He was in the Marion County area prior to 1786. He was listed on the 1786 Tax list in Prince George Parish (Georgetown District) in Captain Stephen Godbold's company. He was taxed for 206 acres of land. He was the only Collins listed in Prince George Parish in 1786. William Collins was listed in Prince Frederick Parish in 1786. They could be brothers (or not).
He was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived exactly or who his neighbors were.

Marion District was formed in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District.
On 10 Nov 1798 Dempsey Collins sold 102 acres to William Palmer Jr. This was land on Flat Swamp waters of Catfish Creek being part of a 300 acre grant to Dempsey Collins dated 7 Dec 1789. It was signed by Dempsey (with a mark) and by Mary Collins, wife of Dempsey. Witnesses were John Russ and William Gregg. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A page 70 from from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996, * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book).
Demsey Collins was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District. He wasn't listed near any other Collins families.

On 22 Mar 1802 Dempsey Collins was named as a trustee in a deed of gift from James Davis to the children of his niece Ann Buckels. Dempsey Collins and Zachariah Godbold were to hold the property in trust until they came of age. If none of her issue arrives at age 21, then the property was to be divided between the issue of Mary Collins. This could be Mary, wife of Dempsey Collins, though the deed does not say so. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B page 64).
On 14 Jan 1803 Dempsey Collins sold 198 acres of land to Thomas Collins, this being part of Dempsey's 300 acre grant dated 23 Nov 1789. He sold the other 102 acres in 1798 (see above). Land was on Flat Swamp waters of Catfish Creek. He also sold him 34 acres adjoining the same tract, being part of grant to John Owens. (Deed does not say how it got from John Owens to Dempsey Collins). I think that Thomas Collins could be Dempsey's brother, but I have no direct proof of that. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 69).
On 30 Jan 1807 Dempsey Collins and wife Mary took Martin Burd (Bird, Byrd) to Court for slander. ("Marion County Court Records Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861", Extracted by Lucille Utley, Transcribed by Teri Dalrymple, Three Rivers Historical Society, 2002)
In 1810 Dempsey Collins was still in Marion District. Shadrack Collins was just two houses away. I don't know their relationship to each other. No other Collins families were close by.
