I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to William S. Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).

William S. Collins was born 10 Mar 1822 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know what his "S" middle initial stood for.

I believe that William is a son of the elder William S. Collins (c1792) based on the name, first of all, and that William S. (Sr) had an apparent son (otherwise unidentified) the same age, and that a "W. J. Collins" was named as an heir of William S. Collins (Sr) in an Equity record. That W. J. Collins is probably W. S. Collins instead. I'm not totally sure of this, but I think the connection is valid. I have not yet found any other "W. J." Collins who could be the child of William S. Collins (Sr).

For the 1830 census, William S. Collins would have been about 5 years old, so he could be enumerated in either the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30) or in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). Several Collins families had apparent sons this age, but they are all positively identified. Dorothy Collins (wife of William S., who was listed in a separate household in 1830) had two apparent sons 5-9. William S. Collins had one son 5-9, and one under 5,

William would have been about 15 years old for the 1840 census, so he ought to be listed in either the 15-19 age group (born ca 1820/25) or in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30). Several Collins households included males in these categories, but most are already positively identified.  William S. Collins (who, interestingly, was listed as William J. Collins this year) had three sons 15-19, and I'm sure one of them was the younger William.

William S. Collins was listed on the 1850 census in Marion County in the household of William A. McCall and wife Louisa McCall. William was listed as an Overseer. It doesn't seem as though they were related to each other, as he was the only one in the household born in Marion Dist, SC. Joseph Collins (c1810) was just 9 households away. I don't know how they might be related, though certainly cousins.

On 2 Jan 1854 William S. Collins acted as "next friend" for the minor children of William S. Collins, showing he was probably closely related to them, probably their brother (as I believe). It is also possible that their father was acting as their "next friend".. (Equity Roll # 180 from Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley)

I didn't locate William S. Collins on the 1860 census. I did find a "W. S. Collins" listed on the 1860 Slave schedule in nearby Georgetown District, South Carolina, but I don't know if that was him. He was not listed there on the regular census.

William S. Collins married Adaline --- before ca 1866, presumably in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is.

William was elected to the South Carolina Congress as a Representative from Marion County in 1868 under the new Constitution (post Civil War). Sellers wrote about this:

"In 1868 at the first election under the Constitution of that year, Henry E. Hayne, a mulatto Negro was elected to the state Senate. I am not certain as to who were elected as representatives, but think it was B. F. Thompson, Ebben Hayes (white) and W. S. Collins (white); the white men were called scalawags." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, pages 96-97)

They were listed in Wahee Township for the 1870 census. They were the only Collins family in that township. William was listed as a State Representative.

Apparently, William did not run for re-election in 1870, or if he did, he lost, for he was no longer a Representative after 1870.

They were still in Wahee for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I didn't find any of them on the 1900 census, at least not in Marion County.

William died on 10 Jun 1905 and is buried at the Moody Smith Cemetery in Marion County.

Children

William S. Collins and wife Adaline had nine children per the 1870 and 1880 census. See the report section for what I have on them.
