I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of Aaron Cox and Olly Baker
This page is out of date. Click here for up to date info.
Aaron Cox was born ca 1755/60 (per census analysis) or specifically on 2 Oct 1757 though I dont know the source for that date. He was probably born in Monmouth County, New Jersey or somewhere in that vicinity.
Aaron is a proven son of John Cox and Margaret Morris as proven by a 1782 deed from his Uncle Thomas Salter naming him (Aaron) and others as children of John Cox. Further proof is found in a 1790 deed where John Cox and wife Margaret deed land to "my son" Aaron Cox.
Sometime by the late 1770's, Aaron and his parents and siblings all moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina.
In a Court case dated 1 Jan 1779, Aaron Coxes property line was mentioned in a case brought by his brother Morris Coxe against Isaiah Lemon (also a relative) for Trespassing and damaging property on Leonards Fork, Indian Creek.
(Morgan District Superior Court Minutes)On 23 Apr 1782, Thomas Salter (Aarons Uncle) of Philadelphia, Merchant, deeded land to his half brother John Coxe and to Johns children: Aaron Coxe, Paul Coxe, Elisha Coxe, and Elijah Coxe. Land on the North Side of South Fork Catawba River, and south branch of Fishers Creek. Witnesses were Rachel Coxe, Nancy Coxe and R. Whitehead.
(Lincoln Co, NC Deed Book 2 page 679).On 1 Jun 1782, John Cox (Aarons father) and Aaron Cox deeded 10 acres of land to Deder Heffner for 10 Pounds. The land was said to be adjoining "Mill Pond. Witnesses were Robert Abernathy and Paul Cox.
(Lincoln Co, NC Deed Book 2 page 795).On 4 Jun 1787, Aaron Cox obtained a marriage bond in Lincoln County to marry Olly Baker. Absalom Bonham (his brother-in-law) was Surety (bondsman.). Presumably they married on that day or soon after.
Olly Baker was born ca 1760/65 (per census analysis). I have no clue where she was born, nor who her parents were. See my
Baker pages for a little bit of data on the Bakers.Aaron Cox was listed on the 1790 census in Lincoln County, North Carolina in the 6th Company. Several of his siblings were listed nearby. He was next door to brother Morris Cox and just two houses from Moses Moore (brother-in-law). There was a Joseph Baker a few more houses away, perhaps a brother (or father) to Olly Baker Cox. There was also an Abram Baker and a Joseph Baker Jr listed in the same company but not too close by. All could be related to Olly in some way.

On 4 Apr 1790 John Cox and wife Margaret of Lincoln, deeded land to "son Aaron Cox" of Lincoln, being 158 acres on both sides of Leonards Fork of Indian Creek. Witnesses were Moses Moore (brother-in-law) and Elisha Cox (brother).
(Lincoln Co, NC Deed Book 16 page 52)On 7 Apr 1794 Aaron Cox of Lincoln, sold 82 acres to Morris Cox, Esquire (his brother) for 30 pounds. The land was on Indian Creek and part of a State Grant to Aaron Cox dated 1 Jan 1792. Witnesses were James Holland and Ad. Brevard.
(Lincoln Co, NC Deed Book 17 page 51).They were listed on the 1800 census in Lincoln County. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I cant determine who their neighbors were.

On 25 Sep 1805, Aaron Cox of Lincoln sold land to Lawson Henderson. The land was described as being 100 acres, being Aarons 1/6 share of 600 acres on Howards Creek. The deed was signed by both Aaron Cox and Paul Cox (his brother). Im not sure what land this was, but since it was divided 6 ways that must be a clue. Aaron was one of eleven children so it seems unlikely this was part of his fathers estate, though John Cox had died by this time. It could be part of Johns estate.
(Lincoln Co, NC Deed Book 23 page 112).On 2 Oct 1805, Aaron Cox and wife Alle of Lincoln County sold 2 tracts of land to Nathaniel Alexander, Executor of Wallace Alexander for $500. The first was 158 acres on Leonards Fork of Indian Creek. The second tract was 82 acres. Signed by Aaron Cox and Alle Cox (she signed with a mark). Witnesses were Joseph Morris and James Webb.
(Lincoln Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 517).This deed seems to be the selling out of all of their Lincoln County property before their move to neighboring Buncombe County. They must have lived somewhere near the Sandy Mush Creek region.
On 26 Aug 1808 Aaron Cox sold 200 acres in Buncombe County on Lee Mill Creek to Lewis Sandlin. I have not yet found where Aaron obtained this land. It may have been a land grant or a deed that was not filed properly. I dont have the details of the deed yet, but only data from an abstract.
(Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book B page 65).They were listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe County apparently somewhere near Sandy Mush Creek (based on neighbors names that I know).

They were still in Buncombe for the 1820 census. They seemed to be in the same area as before. Elijah Lee was one of his "next door" neighbors. He sold Aaron some land in 1821 and 1822.

(Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 16 page 69).On 20 Nov 1826, William W. Erwin sold Aaron Coxe 400 acres on the French Broad River. I have no details yet.
(Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 14 page 282).On 24 Jan 1828, Aaron Cox sold John Plemmons 250 acres on Lees Mill Creek. I have no additional details yet.
(Buncombe Co, NC Deed Book 22 page 240).It must have been around this time (1828) that Aaron and family moved into neighboring Haywood County.
Aaron was listed on the 1830 census in Haywood County, North Carolina. Im not entirely sure, but it looks like they were in the section of Haywood that later became Jackson County (in 1851). Aaron was listed next door to his presumed son Elijah Cox.

On 6 Apr 1830, Peter Penland sold Aaron Cox 50 acres on Lee Mill Creek in Buncombe County.

I did not find Aaron nor Olly on the 1850 census. I suppose they died in the 1840-1850 time-frame or else left Western North Carolina, though they would have been in their 80's at that time.
Aaron and Olly had several children per the various census records, however, only one is proven as far as I know (my ancestor Sarah). I have a list of "likely suspects" who are surely part of this family, though unproven. Ive also seen a list of children shared by another researcher from some research done in the 1960's showing several children which I cant confirm (or refute). All said, the list below is probably incomplete.
Unknown Son (Grandson?) (1815/20)
Unknown Son (Grandson?) (1820/25)
Unknown Son (Grandson)? (1820/25)
I have no evidence who this son might have been. That early research I mentioned showed a "John Cox" born "1791" in this family. This isnt a perfect fit, but it works. However, I have no data on any John Cox that might be in this family, but it was worth mentioning.
Sarah was apparently home with her parents in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800).
She married
Joseph Miller between 1810 and ca 1812 in Buncombe Co, NC. See their own page for additional information.I have no evidence who this son might have been. That early research I mentioned showed a "Joseph Cox" born "1793" in this family. This isnt a perfect fit, but it works. However, I have no data on any Joseph Cox that might be in this family, but it was worth mentioning.
This could be the same person as Rachel Cox (1784/94) who married William Grantham in 1807, but was soon divorced. She was listed a few houses from Aaron Cox in 1810. See her entry below for more on her.
He was apparently with his parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and apparently with them in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).
In March 1826, Elijah Cox obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Betsey Gibson. Joseph Gibson was the bondsman. Elizabeth Gibson was born ca 1800/10, probably a daughter of Joseph Gibson.
They were listed on the 1830 census next door to Aaron Cox, probably Elijahs father.

Elijah Cox was listed on the 1835 voter list in Haywood County in Shoal Creek Precinct.
On 6 Jan 1840, Isaac Morrison of Macon County sold 100 acres to Elijah Cox "of Haywood", land on Big Savannah. Witnesses were W. R. Buckanon, and James Buckanon. This deed signifies Elijahs move from Haywood to Macon.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1246).Also on 6 Jan 1840 , Isaac Morrison sold another 100 acres to Elijah Cox on the same creek and with the same witnesses. This could be a duplicate, or actually a separate deed.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1266).On 24 Feb 1840 Isaac Morrison sold 60 acres to Elijah Cox "of Macon". The land was on the west side of Big Savannah Creek. Witnessed by W. R. Buckanon, and Jacob Mason.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1268).Elijah Cox was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County.

On 6 Jun 1840 Elijah Cox sold 100 acres to Jacob Sims on Big Savannah Creek. Witnesses were W. R. Buckanan and Jacob Mason.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1240).On the same date (6 Jun 1840), Elijah Cox sold 60 acres to Jacob Sims, also on Big Savannah Creek. Witnesses were W. R. Buckanan and Jacob Mason.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1241.There was yet another deed on the same date where Elijah sold 60 acres to Jacob Sims. The deed had the same witnesses.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1242).Elijah Cox was mentioned in a deed dated 27 Feb 1841 where Jacob Sims sold some of the land he bought from Elijah to John Wilson and William Tatham. The deed mentioned one tract of 100 acres "occupied by Elija Cox" including the mill. This seems to show that Elijah still lived on the land after he sold it to Jacob Sims.
(Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1358).In June 1842 Macon County Court, Elijah Cox was listed as a juror for Savannah Precinct for the upcoming elections.
(Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 189).I have found no additional records on Elijah Cox. He must have moved away from Macon County in the 1840's. One of his daughters (Sarah) married in Macon in 1849 and was still in Macon for the 1850 census. I dont know where Elijah and the rest of the family went.
I found an Elijah Cox age 42 (born ca 1808 in NC) on the 1850 census in Gordon Co, GA. He could be this same Elijah, but I'm not sure. His wife was named "Mary", and if it is the same Elijah, then that means his wife Elizabeth had died before then (unless her name is "Mary Elizabeth"). This same family was enumerated twice in 1850 Gordon County with slightly different enumerations.
The names of some of the children still at home in 1850 match those shared with me by another researcher as being children of our Elijah Cox, so it seems this is the same family in Gordon Co, GA, but I'm still unsure.
He was apparently with his parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and apparently with them in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). He seemed to be home still in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1840, so probably married and on his own by then.
Elisha Cox was listed as a voter in the 1835 Congressional Elections in Haywood County in Shoal Creek Precinct.
I did not find Elisha Cox on the 1840 census.
Rachel Cox was born ca 1784/94 in Lincoln Co, NC. I do not know if she is Aaron and Ollys daughter, but she is connected to them somehow. If she is their daughter, she is probably the same person as the unknown daughter born ca 1790/94 with them in 1800.
Rachel Cox married William Grantham in February 1807 (see below for proof) presumably in Buncombe County, though possibly in Lincoln County.
A William Grantham was listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe County next door to Aaron Cox, but I dont believe it is the same person, for that William was aged 45 and up (born before 1765), and this William (who married Rachel) was only 16 in 1807 (so born ca 1791). Rachel Grantham was listed as head of household just a few houses from Aaron Cox in 1810. It would seem from this that she and William were already separated at this time.
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1810 Buncombe Co, NC pg 249 Rachel Grantham 00000-10100 Analysis: 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Rachel COX Grantham (1784/94) d/o Aaron & Olly? 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Daughter? (1800/10)
Much information is given in her divorce record dated 19 Nov 1813. In that record (in Buncombe County) her husband William Grantham said he married Rachel Cox in February 1807 when he was only 16 years old. He said that Rachels base conduct "was better calculated to destroy, than to ensure conjugal happiness.", and that at present (1813) she was bound over in Lincoln County Superior Court to stand trial on a charge of murdering "one of her Spurious Children".
(North Carolina Divorce Records LP 270).The above divorce record shows several things. First it proves her marriage, second it proves there were marital problems (that is why she was head of household in 1810), and then it shows that she apparently had some children out of wedlock, one of whom she was accused of murdering. I have not followed up on the Lincoln County Court Records to see if more is recorded about her. I dont know why she was in Lincoln instead of Buncombe, unless she returned there for some reason after 1810.
I did not find Rachel Cox Grantham on the 1820 census, but once again, William Grantham (the older one, not her ex-husband) was near Aaron Cox in Buncombe County.
I did not find her in 1830 either. It is possible that she was back with her parents, for they did have a female age 30-39 (born ca 1790/1800) with them that year who was not with them before that (in 1820).
I have no other data on Rachel Cox Grantham.
Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Aaron Cox had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was gone by 1820 so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Son (Grandson?) (1815/20).
Aaron Cox had an apparent son or grandson this age. He was not home in 1820 (so probably with his parents whomever they were). He was with Aaron Cox in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). He was gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then.Unknown Son (Grandson?) (1820/25).
Aaron Cox had an apparent grandson this age. He was with Aaron Cox in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). He was gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then.Unknown Son (Grandson)? (1820/25).
Aaron Cox had an apparent grandson this age. He was with Aaron Cox in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). He was gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then.Persons researching this family (click here for data on how to get on or off of this list):
