The author (Marty Grant) is a 2nd cousin 5 times removed to Chapman J. Crawford.

Chapman J. Crawford was born ca 1816/17 per age of 33 on the 1850 census. He was born in Marion District, South Carolina (per 1850 census.)

Chapman is a proven child of James Crawford and Rachel Nevils. He was named in the Equity records as an heir to James, and Mr. Sellers also stated that Chapman was James' child:

... James Crawford, the father of Chapman J. Crawford, married Miss Rachel Nevils, and by her had two sons, Chapman J. and William H., and three or four daughters; ...

... The sons of James Crawford, the second, were Chapman J. and William H. Crawford. Chapman was an ambitious, energetic and enterprising man; married, first, a Miss Jolly, an only child of Joseph Jolly, a very wealthy man in West Marion; she died, leaving an only child; he married again, and the second wife died, and he married a third time. I think he had two or three children in all. Dr. Ross married the daughter by the Jolly wife; Junius H. Law, of Darlington, married a daughter by one of his other wives.

By his [Chapman J. Crawford's] energy and push and by his marriages, he made property and left a large estate at his death, which occurred in November, 1852, when only in the prime of life; he lived fast (not in the sense of a dissipated life) and went through life in a hurry...

... Recurring to the late Chapman J. Crawford, it is proper to say that he was elected to the lower House of the Legislature in 1844, as hereinbefore stated, and again in 1846, and served two terms. In 1852, he was a candidate for the Senate against Dr. Robert Harllee, and after a very heated campaign, he was beaten by 171 majority, and, like Horace Greeley in 1872, did not survive the campaign more than a month. It was thought and said by some that his defeat killed him or contributed to his death; he was a very ambitious man. [W. W. Sellers, Esq., A History of Marion County South Carolina: From Its Earliest Times to the Present, 1901. pp. 143-144.]

Chapman should have been home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged about 3 so he should have been in the under 10 age group.  His father James was listed in Marion in 1820 and did have one apparent son in that age group.

Chapman's father James Crawford died in 1827. In the ensuing probate, Chapman was named among the heirs in a document dated 25 Jan 1830. [Equity Roll # 47, Lucille Utley, Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls]

For the 1830 census, I believe that Chapman was living with his step-father Dr. John A. Cherry (who married widow Rachel in 1829.) Chapman would have been about 13 so, he should have been enumerated in the 10-14 age group. John A. Cherry had two boys that age with him in Marion District.

Chapman J. Crawford married Miss Jolly before ca 1839, either in Marion District or "next door" in Darlington District. I don't know her given name, but she was a child of Joseph A. Jolly and Susan W. Cannon.

Chapman was listed on the 1840 census in Darlington District, the only Crawford listed in that county in 1840.  Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were. He was living alone, so apparently his wife had died already.

Mary Margaret was born ca 1822/23 per age of 27 on 1850 census. She was born in Marion District per the 1850 census. I don't know who her parents were.

They were listed in Marion District for the 1850 census.

Mary Margaret Cormick Crawford died on 10 Jan 1852 in Marion District. [The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research SCMAR, Volume I Number 1, Winter, 1973 Marriage and Obituary Notices from the Darlington Flag. p. 46.]

Chapman J. Crawford died on 1 Nov 1852 [** can't find my source for this right now] in Marion District.

An Equity roll dated 4 Jan 1854 shows that Chapman was dead by then. The record also named his daughter Susan Eliza Crawford, as his heir and heir of Joseph W. Jolly, deceased (Susan's grandfather). The record also showed Chapman's other heirs as "Angelina Vernelle" Crawford and "Angelica Susan" Crawford. Another record gives their names slightly differently. [Equity Roll # 50, Utley, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls]

Another Equity record (filed 28 Oct 1853) gave his heirs as "Susan Eliza Crawford", "Gulielma V. Crawford" and "Angelica B. Crawford". It is clear that the last two daughters had unusual names. The two equity records and the 1850 census all give slightly different information on them. [Equity Roll # 310, Utley, Marion County, South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls]

Children of Chapman J. Crawford. Chapman and Miss Jolly had one child: Susan Eliza Crawford. She was living with her grandparents for the 1850 census. Chapman and Miss Cormick had two children together. They were with their parents in 1850 and with aunt Elizabeth Crawford Milling in 1860 in Darlington. Refer to register report below for details.
