[Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

The author (Marty Grant) is a 5th Great Grand Nephew to Hardy Crawford.

Hardy Crawford was born ca 1753-54 or before. This date is based on the fact that his father James died on 28 May 1753, and Hardy is a proven child of James. Of course Hardy could have been born up to 9 months after his father's death.

Hardy is a proven child of James Crawford and Keziah Saunders. The baptisms of their children (Charity, Mercy, John, James and Hepsabeth) were recorded in the Prince Frederick Parish records. For some reason Hardy was not mentioned there, but he was baptized on 2 Apr 1759 at St. Phillips Parish (in what later became Charleston District.) His baptism record shows his parents as "James and Kesiah Crawford." ["Register of St. Philip's Parish, Charles Town, or Charleston, S. C. 1754-1810" edited by D. E. Huger Smith and A. S. Salley, Jr. reprinted in 1971 by the University of South Carolina Press in Columbia, S. C. p. 38. shared with me by Jane Grace.]

This information about Hardy's parents is new to most Crawford researchers, myself included, so it is nice to finally know where he belongs, so thanks to Jane Grace for finding that record!

Other than the baptism record, I have seen no records for Hardy Crawford prior to 1790, which is probably due to the destruction of the early Georgetown County records during the Civil War. Marion County was part of Georgetown from 1769 until 1800.

Like many early Marion County families, Hardy Crawford was mentioned by W. W. Sellers in his book on Marion County. Sellers' book is wonderful, and a resource that every Marion County researcher should use, but like all people, he has made a few mistakes in his work (he admits as much himself in the text). Regardless of the mistakes, his work is a wonderful source for information, though often confusing, especially on the earlier generations (those going back before Sellers own birth).

Sellers made several references to Hardy Crawford and his family. The first reference he made, was a quotation from another source ("History of the Old Cheraws ..." 1867, by Rev. Alexander Gregg):

"Bishop Gregg, p. 71, says: "Of the settlers at Sandy Bluff, the Murfees, Sanders, Gibsons and Crawfords accumulated the largest properties, and became most prominent. John Crawford, the first of that name, had three sons---James, John and Hardy. ..." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 142, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

The above quotation (from an even earlier book) says that Hardy Crawford was a son of someone named "John Crawford", and a brother of James and John. Hardy's father being named "John" was an error of course, but Hardy was brother to a James and John Crawford.

Sellers mentioned Hardy Crawford again (and again referring to him as a son of "John Crawford"):

"Old John Crawford had three sons, James, John and Hardy. We have traced it through James, the eldest; of John and Hardy's posterity we know not how they ran. There have been other Crawfords here, but whether from John or Hardy, or both, we can't say; ..." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 145, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

The above shows that Sellers did not know too much about Hardy's family.

Hardy Crawford married Rhoda Gibson sometime ca 1784 or before. I've only found one record with her name on it, and it seems to prove her maiden name, though it is not real specific. It is an Equity case brought by Enos Tart against Gadi Crawford (son of Hardy and Rhoda) in which it states that Gadi Crawford was an heir of Levi Gibson, deceased, and it also mentions "the heirs of Rhody Crawford" as being part of the Levi Gibson estate. It does not specifically state what the relationship between Rhody Crawford and Levi Gibson was, but I suppose they were father and daughter, or else brother and sister. Based on census records, it appears that Levi Gibson is too young to be Rhoda's father, so probably her brother instead. ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", Roll # 48, page 15 by Lucille Utley)

I have the birth year of "1764" for Rhoda, but no source. I also don't know who her parents are.

The published version of the 1790 census (published around 1901 I think) does not show Hardy Crawford listed, but there was a "Mary" Crawford listed, who's household matched up fairly well with what Hardy's should be. I finally checked the original 1790 census, and sure enough, I believe it should say "Hardy" and not "Mary". His entry is in a fold of the paper, and the first name, and the enumerations are almost totally illegible, though I suspect back around 1901 they were a little easier to read, though obviously still messed up. If I am correct about this, then Hardy Crawford is listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown County, in Prince George Parish. This listing was alphabetical, so we can't tell who any of his neighbors were. Since the original record is not illegible, I can't be sure if these enumerations are correct, but I'm going with the published numbers. Don't forget this might not actually be Hardy Crawford at all:

On 3 Jan 1798, Hardy Crawford purchased land from Henry and Keturah Middleton. It was 300 acres, with no references to rivers, swamps or other landmarks. The description said it was part of a grant to Champineau Hinclley in Craven County bordering Daniel Laroche, Stephen Middleton and heirs of Gideon Gibson. Witnesses were Thomas Knight and John Mace. It was proven 29 Jan 1798 before James Crawford, JP. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 230, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

On 18 Nov 1799, Hardy Crawford (and William Lewis) witnessed a deed between Richard Howard to William Whitefield for land on Tobys Creek Swamp. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A, page 151, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

Hardy Crawford was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed between Solomon Blackman and James Crawford (died 1804). This James Crawford could be Hardy's supposed brother "James" that Sellers referred to. No other Crawfords were nearby, but several Gibsons were (perhaps relatives of Hardy's wife Rhoda). (Note the complete 1800 Marion census is online on my web pages)

On 25 Feb 1801, Hardy Crawford (and Barnaby Watson, and Willis Finklea) witnessed a deed between Willis Finklea, John Finklea to Thomas T. Wickham for land on Catfish Swamp. John Finklea was was Hardy's son-in-law. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B, page 118, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

On 11 Feb 1804, Hardy Crawford sold 200 acres of land to Jesse Jones for $200. The land was on the North East side of the Peedee River. Witnesses were William Taylor and Stephen Owen. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C, page 51, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

On 15 Apr 1807, Hardy Crawford was named as one of the Appraisers of the Estate of Benjamin Port Barrow, deceased. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book I page 114 published in an issue of the "Pee Dee Queue", I don't have an exact reference yet **)

Sometime later in 1807 (between April 15th and September  8th), Hardy Crawford died in Marion District, SC. His Estate record had an inventory dated 1807 (no specific date), and another record in the Probate records was dated 8 Sep 1807, and in another record, his children reported that he died "in 1807 or 8" (more on that later). (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book I page 112 published in an issue of the "Pee Dee Queue", I don't have an exact reference yet **)

On 8 Sep 1807, Letters of Administration were granted to James Crawford, John Mace and Gadi Crawford. This same record referred to Hardy as being "of Hickory Grove".  Bondsmen for the Administration bond were James Crawford, John Mace, Gadi Crawford, James Crawford and John Gibson. Samuel Gasque was a Witness to the bond. (Probate Roll # 146, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).

In the above mentioned Inventory (1807), Hardy Crawford's Estate was appraised by Jesse Jones, William Cox and Thomas Godbold Jr. Slaves in the Estate were named in the Inventory: Tom, Amy, Jude, Syd, Alu?, Bet. Soaf, Shade, Molbro, Jane, Fame, Hanner, Ned, Pat, Julian. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book I page 112 published in an issue of the "Pee Dee Queue", I don't have an exact volume number yet **)

None of the Estate records mentioned a wife or any heirs for Hardy Crawford. Other records do prove his children, but I have found none showing his wife's name (i.e. "Rhoda Gibson"). She may have died before he did.

The 1810 census shows James Crawford (actually James G. Crawford) as a head of household with several older males with him (his brothers). There were no females with them, so this leads me to believe that their mother Rhoda was dead by then, or else living elsewhere.

The 1811 Tax list for Marion District showed Hardy Crawford's Estate as being taxed for that year.

The 1814 Tax list for Marion District showed Hardy Crawford's Estate as being taxed for that year, and charged with $9.46 tax.

On 6 Oct 1820, an Equity case was brought before the Court of Equity against Gadi Crawford, James G. Crawford and Nathaniel Murfee by Charles C. Williams, Survivor of "Mott and Williams" for debts related to a business venture. This record proves that Gadi Crawford, James G. Crawford, Willis Crawford and Rhoda Crawford, wife of Hugh Godbold, were all children of Hardy Crawford who died "in 1807 or 8". The record clearly gives this relationship. ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", Roll # 44, page 13, by Lucille Utley)

These familial relationships are further proven by another Equity case, dated 28 Jul 1849 regarding the Estate of James G. Crawford. This record mentions he made his Will 12 May 1846 naming his "deceased sister Mary Finklea", "brother Stephen Crawford", "brother Willis G. Crawford", "sister Rhoda Godbold". ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", Roll # 117, page 40 by Lucille Utley)

Sellers mentioned several of Hardy's children, and correctly listed them as siblings, but he did not know who their parents were:

"There have been other Crawfords here, but whether from John or Hardy, or both, we can't say; for instance, James, called Cype, lived upon and owned the grove lands, now owned by the estates of governor Ellerbe and James G. Haselden, Cype Crawford died there, back in the '40's [1840's]; never married. He had a brother, Willis Crawford, who married Sallie Bethea, and raised a large family, and died in 1851, in what is now Bethea Township; ... "Cype" and Willis Crawford had another brother--think he was a brother----named Gadi. The writer never saw him; he died unmarried. ... "Cype" and Willis Crawford had a sister, named Rhoda, who became the wife of the late Hugh Godbold; she has been dead some years and left no children." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 145, 146 by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

The records for this family are fairly complete, at least as far as their children are concerned.

Children of Hardy and Rhoda (Gibson) Crawford. Hardy and Rhoda had six children as proven by various records (all mentioned in the commentary section above.)

Mercy Crawford (1774/84)

James G. Crawford (1784/90)

Stephen Crawford (1784/90)

Willis G. Crawford (c1793)

Gadi Crawford (1790/1793)

Rhoda Crawford (c1800)

Mercy Crawford was born ca 1774/84 (probably ca 1784) in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). She is a proven child of Hardy and Rhoda Gibson Crawford, mainly by being named in the Will of her brother James G. Crawford as his "sister".

Mercy Crawford was apparently at home with her parents for the 1790 census, though females were not enumerated by age that year, but Hardy had two females with him, one was presumably his wife, the other presumably daughter Mercy.

Mercy Crawford married John C. Finklea sometime between 1790 and 1800. John was born ca 1774/75 in SC, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that later became Marion County.  I don't know the source, but I've been told that John Finklea was a son of Thomas Finklea. Sellers mentioned John Finklea and confirmed that his wife was a Crawford, though he didn't mention her given name. However, deed records prove that John Finklea's wife was named "Mercy", so it is clear it is the same person.

Here is what Sellers said about John Finklea's family:

"There were two old Finkleas in the early times in the county --- John Finklea and "Corn-making Willis." John Finklea, whose wife was a Crawford, with his numerous family, went to Alabama, and died there about 1850. Captain J. C. Finklea, a grand-son, now in Wahee Township, is the the only representative of that branch of the family... Captain J. C. Finklea is sixty-three years of age, and has no child or children, and it is not presumable that he ever will have any." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 223, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

There were two John Finkleas listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, one listed as "Senr", the other as "Junr". I believe "Junr" is the Finklea under study here. He was on the same page with his father-in-law Hardy Crawford, and just a few houses away from him.

1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784)	Mercy CRAWFORD Finklea (1774/84) wife

There are three John Finkleas listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC. The third one is the most likely match. He is the second youngest of the three, and he seems to be in the right area, just two houses from James Crawford Junr, son of James Crawford (c1794).

There were again three John Finkleas on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who any of the neighbors were. None of the three are a clear match, but one can be eliminated easily (John Finklea "Jr" who is far too young). The other two are not so easily distinguished, but one of them has both apparent husband and wife in the age 45+ column (born before 1775) which could disqualify them from being this John Finklea. That leaves one that seems a more likely match, but still I'm not totally sure, so I'll give both listings here:

Analysis:
* Don't know which is which

The 1830 census for Marion shows a John C. Finklea (c1790/1800) with an apparent wife born ca 1800/10. This does not seem to be the same family that I'm looking for. He was the only "John" listed, so this may mean that our John and family had made their trek to Alabama by this time. I believe he was in Monroe Co, AL in 1830. There was a "John Fichlen" on the index, and this is probably John Finklea. I'd have to see the original to be sure.

"J. C. Finklea" was listed on the 1840 census index for Monroe Co, AL, as was his son Willis Finklea.

"John C. Finklia" age 75 was on the 1850 census in Monroe Co, AL. He was born in SC, and it seems to be the same man. His wife was dead by then though, and he had a new wife named "Mary" age 50, or perhaps she was a daughter.

** I need to do some more research on this family. I know there are several deeds in Marion for John and Mercy Finklea, and they may be listed on the 1830 and 1840 census records in Alabama.

James G. Crawford was born ca 1784/90 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a proven son of Hardy and Rhoda Gibson Crawford. I don't know what his middle initial of "G" stood for, though it certainly could be "Gibson". Sellers stated that his nickname was "Cype". I suspect this was to distinguish him from the bevy of other James Crawfords around. Some records list him as James C Crawford, which is either a misreading of a "G" or perhaps due to his nickname of "Cype".

James G. Crawford was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed (not by name) in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90).

He seemed to be at home with his parents for the 1800 census as well, listed (not by name) in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90).

James was listed as head of household on the 1810 census in Marion District, with several of his younger brothers living with him, apparently. He was listed between an S. Spalding and Easter Barfield. The only other Crawford in the county that year was on the same page, but several households away, and that was another James Crawford (1749). The two probable siblings with James can't be positively identified, so I'm just guessing it was Stephen and Willis, meaning Gadi was probably living with someone else, perhaps a married sister.

According to Equity records, in 1811, James G. Crawford was appointed guardian to his "infant" brother ("Infant" means under the age of 21) Willis Crawford, and sister Rhoda Crawford. ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", Roll # 44, page 13, by Lucille Utley).

James G. Crawford was listed on the 1811 Marion Tax list, and taxed $1.40.

James G. Crawford was listed on the 1814 Marion Tax list, and taxed $17.33.

On 19 Feb 1814, James G. Crawford was one of many purchasers at the Estate sale of William Owens, deceased. (Marion Dist, SC Sales Book A page 75, published in the "Pee Dee Queue")

On 11 Feb 1815, James C. Crawford was named one of the appraisers for the estate of Clark Carlile, deceased. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836, page 120, published in the "Pee Dee Queue")

I did not find James G. Crawford listed on the 1820 census. He was not listed as a head of household, so he probably was with some other family, perhaps a sibling.

On 7 Jul 1823, James G. Crawford was mentioned in the Court of Ordinary, as having refused to qualify as executor for the estate of Frederick Jones. This means he was named Executor in the Will, but for some reason or another, didn't want to do it. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825)

"James Crawford" was listed on the 1824 Marion Tax list. His middle initial was not used on this record, but I'm reasonably sure it was James G. Crawford. He was taxed $2.48.

On 17 Feb 1829, an Inventory was made of the estate of Enos Tart, deceased. Among the notes was one for James G. Crawford (meaning he owed money to Enos Tart).  (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836, page 34, published in the "Pee Dee Queue")

James G. Crawford was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were. He was living alone.

James G. Crawford was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC, in fact, he was the only Crawford listed on that particular census. He was next to J. F. Livingston and Levi Powers. James had some younger males with him, relationship unknown. Perhaps they were nephews.

On 12 May 1846, James G. Crawford made his Will in Marion Dist, SC. He named "children of my deceased sister Mercy Finklea" (but did not give their names), and "my brother Stephen Crawford", and "my brother Willis G. Crawford", and "children of Willis G. Crawford" (names not given), and "Samuel F. Gibson" (no relationship stated), and "to my sister Rhoda Godbold". (Marion Dist, SC Will Book B page 98) and (Probate Roll # 176, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", page 130, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).

The above Will was proven on 7 Jul 1846, meaning James died sometime between May 12th and July 7th, 1846 in Marion Dist, SC.

Since James G. Crawford never married, he left no heirs other than his siblings, nieces and nephews.

Stephen Crawford was born ca 1784/90 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a proven son of Hardy and Rhoda Gibson Crawford, primarily due to being named in his brother James G. Crawford's 1846 will as "my brother Stephen Crawford". Other records prove James G. is a son of Hardy, so that ties it up nicely.

Stephen Crawford was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed (not by name) in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90).

He seemed to be at home with his parents for the 1800 census as well, listed (not by name) in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90).

Stephen's parents had died before 1810, and Stephen was not listed on the 1810 census, but he may be one of the older males with his brother James. G. Crawford that year, in fact, I'm reasonably sure he is the male age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94) who was with James.

For the War of 1812, Stephen Crawford enlisted as a Private in Captain Elisha Bethea's Company, 5th Regiment, SC Militia, serving from 29 Jun 1812 to 29 Sep 1812.

On 26 Aug 1818 Stephen Crawford (and John N. McRae) witnessed a deed from Thomas Godbold Sr to John Newsom. (Marion County Deed Book G page 123.)

Stephen Crawford must have moved to Alabama after 1818. I did find a Stephen Crawford listed on the 1820 and 1830 census in Baldwin Co, AL, and it is quite possible that this is the same Stephen Crawford, but at present, I have no way to confirm or refute that.

On 21 Feb 1838 Stephen Crawford of Wilcox Co, AL appointed his son John H. Crawford to be his attorney to settle his portion of the the estate of "my brother Gadi Crawford." (Marion Co, SC Deed Book R page 98 from Utley, Abstracts of Marion County [SC] Deed Books Q and R 1836-1842, Three Rivers Historical Society, 2003)

I did not find Stephen Crawford on the 1840 census, at least not in Alabama, nor did I find him in 1850 in Alabama.

I did find a Stephen Crawford, age 55 (born ca 1794/95) in 1850 Lowndes Co, MS. He was born in SC, and he was living alone. This could be the same Stephen, though the age is not a perfect match (though my date of ca 1784/90 is an estimate based on census analysis).

I don't know who Stephen was married to, but he is the father of John H. Crawford and James W. Crawford, both Doctors. Mr. Sellers wrote about John and James but did not state who their parents were.

According to Sellers, John B. Braddy married Mary Crawford, a niece of Rhoda Crawford Godbold. I Don't know if that means Mary is a daughter of Stephen Crawford or not, but he seems the only choice, unless she is a child of Willis G. Crawford, but she wasn't named in his estate records; Therefore I've attached Mary Crawford Braddy to Stephen Crawford, pending other evidence.

More research is needed on Stephen Crawford's family.

Willis G. Crawford was born ca 1792/93 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a proven son of Hardy and Rhoda Gibson Crawford as proven by several records, all mentioned in the main section above.

Willis G. Crawford married Sarah Bethea sometime in the 1820's.

See his own page for additional information.

Gadi Crawford was born ca 1790/93 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). Assuming he was at least 16 when he witnessed a deed in 1806 (see below) then he was born ca 1790. He is a proven son of Hardy and Rhoda Gibson Crawford as proven by several records, all mentioned in the main section above.

Gadi seemed to be home with his parents for the 1800 census, listed as "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800).

On 12 May 1806, Gadi Crawford (and William Whitfield) witnessed a deed between Sarah Bass and Arthur Bird, regarding her reaching age 21 (Arthur Bird was her guardian) and her estate.  (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C, page 339, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

On 22 Dec 1808, Gadi Crawford was one of several purchasers at the Estate Sale for Walter Owens, deceased. (Marion Dist, SC Sales Book A page 78, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

I did not find Gadi Crawford on the 1810 census, but he could have been with his brother James G. Crawford who was listed on that census (he had an extra male born ca 1784/94 and an extra male born ca 1794/1800) or perhaps he was residing with other relatives.

Gadi Crawford was listed on the 1811 Marion District tax list, and taxed $2.17.

On 16 Jan 1812, an Inventory of the estate of William Haselden, deceased, showed notes for Gadi Crawford (meaning he owned Haselden money). (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 170, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

On 10 May 1813, Gadi Crawford was one of the Appraisers of the estate of Isham Bunn, deceased. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 70, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

Gadi Crawford was listed on the 1820 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was living alone, and unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794)	Gadi CRAWFORD (1790/94) s/o Hardy

On 7 Mar 1820, Gadi Crawford was appointed administrator for the estate of William Coletrain. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825).

On 23 Mar 1820, Gadi Crawford was mentioned as being the Administrator for the estate of Stephen Gibson, deceased (he was probably a relative of his). (Marion Dist, SC Administrations A, page 210, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

On 4 Mar 1822, Gadi Crawford was one of the appraisers of the estate of William Davis Jr. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 137, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

For some reason, Gadi Crawford was not listed on the 1824 Marion Tax list.

On 9 May 1827, Gadi Crawford was one of the appraisers of the estate of General Thomas Godbold. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 25 , published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

On the same date (9 May 1827), Gadi Crawford was named as one of the appraisers for the estate of Charles F. Godbold. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 26, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

On 4 Mar 1828, Enos Tart brought a suit against Gadi Crawford in regards to part of the estate of Levi Gibson, deceased, of which Gadi Crawford was an heir. ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 15, Roll # 48, by Lucille Utley)

Gadi Crawford was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was living alone. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800)	Gadi CRAWFORD (1790/94) s/o Hardy

On 3 Oct 1835, Gadi Crawford was listed as one of the appraisers of the estate of Arthur Bird. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 94, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

Gadi Crawford died sometime before 22 Nov 1837, for on that date, Hugh Godbold obtained letters of administration for the estate of "Major Gadi Crawford". (Probate Roll # 139, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", page 115, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).

On 27 Nov 1837, an Inventory of his estate was returned, with Hugh Godbold (his brother-in-law) as his Administrator. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 page 130, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").

According to Sellers, Gadi Crawford never married. The records I've found so far seem to confirm that.

Rhoda Crawford was born ca 1799/1800 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). She is a proven child of Hardy and Rhoda Gibson Crawford as proven by several records, all mentioned in the main section above.

Rhoda was apparently home with her parents for the 1800 census, age "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800. Since her parents died while she was so young, she was probably raised by relatives until  1811 when her brother James was made her guardian.

I don't know where Rhoda was living for the 1810 census, she did not seem to be with her brother James G. Crawford then.

On 25 Sep 1817, Hugh G. Godbold obtained a marriage license to marry "Rhody Crawford". They presumably married that day or shortly thereafter. (Marion Dist, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825).

Hugh G. Godbold was born ca 1796/97 in SC, a son of General Thomas Godbold.

Hugh G. Godbold was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. This census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

Hugh Godbold was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.
