The author (Marty Grant) does not know if he is related to Levi Crawford or not. Levi Crawford was born ca 1778 or before. I have no real clue as to when he was born, but since he was married by 1799, I suspect he was born at least by ca 1778 (assuming he was 21 by 1799). I also don't know if he was born in the Marion County area or if he moved there from elsewhere. He does seem to be related to the other Marion County Crawford families, as he lived near them all. I don't know who Levi Crawford's parents were, but he could be a grandson of James Crawford and Keziah Saunders or perhaps he is from another set of Crawfords. I did not find Levi Crawford on the 1790 census in SC. He was probably still home with his parents then. Levi Crawford married Macharina Owens before 7 Sep 1799 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). She was a proven child of Edward and Ann Owens, and named in his will (dated 7 Sep 1799) as his "Daughter Macariner Crawford". (This Will is online at the Marion Co, SC GenWeb pages) I did not find Levi Crawford on the 1800 census in Marion Dist, SC nor elsewhere in SC. They may have been residing with one of their siblings. None of the Marion District, male Crawfords had any "extra" people with them in 1800. However, several of the Owens households could have contained them, but I don't know enough about the Owens family to analyze the records enough to figure out if they were with one of Macharina's brothers or sisters in 1800. There was a Levi Crawford in Massachusetts, and one in Pennsylvania in 1800, but it seems unlikely either of them are the same person. Levi Crawford died in Marion District before 18 Oct 1806, for on that date letters of Administration were granted to his widow Macharina Crawford, with John Owens and John Smith as Bondsmen. (Probate Roll # 135, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", page 113, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985). On 11 Dec 1806 an estate sale was held for Levi Crawford's estate. Purchasers included Mackrina Crawford, Willis Finklea, Hardy Crawford and others. (Probate Roll # 135, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", page 113, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985). An undated petition (ca 1806/07) was in Levi's Probate file from John Owens who stated that he was security (bondsman) for "Makkariana Crofford" as Administratrix of Levi's estate, but that he didn't think she was doing the job according to law, and that she had removed out of the district, and he wanted to be released from his bond. (Probate Roll # 135, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", page 113, by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985). The last named record above shows that Macharina Owens Crawford moved away from Marion District, SC ca 1807. Later records show she moved to nearby Charleston District (apparently several of her relatives were living there). On 31 Aug 1809, James and Macherina Allwood of Charleston Dist, SC sold their interest in a Negro girl named "Dinah" to Macherina Crawford, widow. Witnesses were Phillip Clark and Thomas Player. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 334, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) I did not find Macharina Crawford on the 1810 census, though I suspect she was in Charleston District with relatives. On 7 Jun 1811, James and Mary Wright of Charleston Dist, SC sold Macharina Crawford of Charleston Dist, SC, their interest in a Negro girl named "Dinah" (same person mentioned in the 1809 deed above, Dinah was left to the children of Elizabeth Deland (or Delany) by her father Edward Owens in his 1799 Will). Witnesses were Abijah Porter (son-in-law of James Crawford Sr-1749) and Bud Pace. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 25, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) I have no data on Macharina Owens Crawford after 1811. She may have remarried someone in Charleston District, or died there, a widow. I found an interesting deed dated January 1809 from Elizabeth Delany of Marion District to John Gasque for 100 acres. Elizabeth Delaney had the land from the Will of her father Edward Owens (who was also father of Macharina Crawford). This deed was witnessed by James Crawford and Silas Beverly. I don't know which James Crawford this was, but it is probably James Crawford (1749-1817) though I can't prove that. If so, that shows some connection between Levi Crawford and the other Marion Crawfords. (Marion County Deed Book F page 437.) Children of Levi and Macharina (Owens) Crawford. Levi Crawford and Macharina had at least two children, as proven by Marion County deeds. Martha Crawford was born before 1806, in Marion Dist, SC. The only record I have of her so far is a deed dated 6 Apr 1818 showing that John Calvit Jr received of John Owens, $483.57 in full, being the part of Levi Crawford's Estate that belongs to Martha Calvit, formerly Martha Crawford, daughter of Levi Crawford. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 69, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) The above record shows that Martha Crawford married John Calvit Jr before 6 Apr 1818, and probably in Charleston Dist, SC. ("Calvit" is probably a variant spelling of Calvert or Colvard). The 1820 census shows a John Calvert in Abbeville District, SC and another one in Spartanburg District. I have no additional data on this family. Levi Crawford was born ca 1800/01 per age of 49 on the 1850 census. He was presumably in Marion Dist, SC. Levi Crawford was not listed on the 1820 census as far as I could find. He was probably too young to be head of household by then. The first record I have of him so far is a deed dated 23 Sep 1822 where Levi Crawford received from John Owens, $600, for "my share of my late father Levi Crawfords Estate". Witnesses were Isaac Porcher and Jacob Gillet. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K, page 140, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) Levi was listed on the 1830 census in Charleston District, St. Johns Berkeley Parish. He was in his 20's, and his apparent wife was also. They had 2 boys under age 5. Levi was still in Charleston for the 1840 census, he was in his 30's as was his apparent wife. There was also a woman in her 60's (born ca 1770/80) with them. Could that be Levi's mother Macharina? Perhaps or it could be his mother-in-law or some other person. They were still in Charleston for the 1850 census and listed in St. Stephens Parish. Unfortunately the census taker only used initials for everyone instead of their names, thus Levi is listed as "L. Crawford" age 49. Levi seems to have died in the 1850's for his wife Eliza is listed as head of household on the 1860 census with several of the children with her.
