I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great grandson of William and Rachel Edwards.
William Edwards was born ca 1825/26 in Wayne Co, NC, somewhere in or near the present Town of Mount Olive. His suspected parents lived on or very close to the Duplin County line (which at that time was not so clearly defined). I base his approximate birth year on his ages given in the various census records. His age was fairly consistent from census to census: 1850 age 24 (c1825/26); 1860 age 32 (c1827/28); 1870 age 44 (c1825/26), 1880 age 53 (c1826/27).
I strongly believe that William is a son of Barnabas and Catherine Edwards, but have no direct proof of that fact. Circumstantial evidence points to them as his parents, but it could be incorrect.
First of all, William named his oldest son "Barnabas". This would make sense if he was named in honor of William's father.
Secondly, Barnabas Edwards did have an apparent son William's age, who is otherwise unaccounted for. In the 1830 census, Barnabas had a male with him aged "under 5", or born ca 1825/30. This fits perfectly with William's birth of ca 1826.
Thirdly, Barnabas Edwards was the only Edwards (at the time of William's birth) who lived near Mount Olive. Other Edwards were not too far from there, but he was the only one who was there. Since William was there in the 1840's through mid 1850's it seems reasonable that he was born and raised there also.
Those three facts above are circumstantial evidence, but they do support William being Barnabas' child. Those are the "pros", now here are the "cons":
Barnabas and family left North Carolina around 1836 for Madison Co, TN. William would only have been about 10 years old then, so it would make no sense for him to remain behind in NC, unless living with his grandparents (quite possible). It is also possible that William did go to Tennessee with his parents, but returned to Wayne County, NC when he was old enough.
In any event, William Edwards was in NC in the late 1840's when he married.
For the 1830 census, William Edwards would have been approximately 4 years old, so if listed on the census, he would be in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30). In the 1830 Wayne Co, NC census, there were several Edwards households, but only one with a child this age, and that was Joseph Edwards, but he is not William's father (Joseph's heirs were all named in Estate records). However, Barnabas Edwards was listed in 1830, but in Duplin County living in present day Mount Olive and he did have a son "under 5".
For the 1840 census, William would have been about 14 years old, so if listed, should be in the age 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30). His suspected parents were in Madison Co, TN for the 1840 census and did not have a son in that age group (their apparent son 1825/30 with them in 1830 was apparently not with them in 1840). Back in Wayne County, there were several Edwards households listed, but as before, only Joseph Edwards had a son that age, and that was not William. My guess is that William was living with some other family members in Wayne County, or he was with his parents in Tennessee, but mis-enumerated. (They did have 3 apparent sons age 5-9, born ca 1830/35, two of whom are unidentified, so one could be William).
William Edwards married Rachel Roberts in Wayne Co, NC before ca 1848. There is no marriage record for them, but their oldest child was born ca 1848. Her maiden name is given on the death certificate of her son Gabriel Edwards (died 1938). Rachel Roberts was born ca 1830/31 in Wayne Co, NC, daughter of Richard Roberts and Rebecca Hobson.
On 8 Aug 1848, William Edwards and William J. Hall witnessed a deed from Willis Hall to Henry Roberts Jr (William's brother-in-law) for land on both sides of the Railroad tracks (in Mount Olive). (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 21 page 140).
William and Rachel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Wayne Co, NC in the division "south of the Neuse River". Clearly they were in what is now Mount Olive. William's occupation was listed a Laborer on the WRRR (I think this stands for the Wilmington - Roanoke Rail Road). This census taker also thoughtfully listed the birth county of each family, leaving it blank for Wayne County, but entering something if a different county. William and family were all born in Wayne County.

On 19 Oct 1853, William Edwards sold 70 acres to his cousin-in-law Gideon M. Roberts. The land was described as on the W & R Railroad. I have not found where William purchased this land. The deed was witnessed by Stephen Williamson. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 23 page 330).
On 28 Oct 1853, James Williams sold William Edwards 82 1/2 acres. No description, but I think it was in Mount Olive. Witnesses were Gideon M. Roberts and Stephen Williamson. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 23 page 344).
On 30 May 1854 William Edwards sold James McDuffie one lot in Town of Mount Olive "where Store House stands", east side of Railroad, Lot # 2. I have not found where William acquired this land. Witnessed by Joel Loftin. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 25 page 262).
On 17 Apr 1855 William Edwards sold one half of Lot # 10 in Mount Olive to James McDuffie. Witnessed by G. M. Roberts and Joseph D. Berry. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 25 page 263).
On 2 May 1856, Ollen Coor, Sheriff of Wayne County, sold land to Jacquiline Jones (of Duplin Co, NC), that had belonged to William Edwards and James McDuffie but had been taken in a Court action. I have not yet checked the Court records for this time period to see what the case was about, though it was probably a matter of debt. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 25 page 447).
On the same date (2 May 1856), Ollen Coor sold another tract to Jacquiline Jones, the land formerly belonging to William Edwards and James McDuffie. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 25 page 449).
This was the last record found for William Edwards in Wayne Co, NC. It would seem that it was around this time that he moved his family down to Horry District, South Carolina and got into the Turpentine business. I don't know what prompted him to move down there unless it was due to the Court actions in 1856. Rachel's brother Henry Roberts went to Horry also, but I don't know if they went together, or separately. I don't know if they had any relatives in Horry already. There were quite a few Roberts families in Horry already, but I know of no provable connection to Rachel's family. There was only one Edwards family in Horry at that time, but he does not seem to be related either. (John Edwards). There was a fairly large Edwards family in neighboring Marion District, but I don't think there is a connection between them and the William Edwards family.
William Edwards and family settled in Gallivants Ferry Township (bordering Marion County), just west of the present town of Aynor.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Horry District, South Carolina. They had a large household, with the addition of a Tyler family residing with them (no known relationship) and with W. P. Lilly and Nancy Jones also residing with them (relationship to both is unknown).

In 1868 Horry "District", became Horry "County".
William and family were listed on the 1870 census in Horry County, South Carolina. They were in Gallivants Ferry Township. They had their orphaned niece Sarah Parker residing with them. Her mother was Nancy Roberts Parker, a sister of Rachel Roberts. Nancy was not dead, but her husband had died, and she farmed out the children to her siblings.

Rachel Roberts Edwards died sometime between 1870 and 1874 in Horry Co, SC or possibly in Marion (now Florence) County. I don't know where she is buried.
William Edwards apparently moved away from Horry County before 1874 and settled in southwestern Marion County, SC in Pee Dee Township (this is now Florence County).
William Edwards married Martha E. Parker ca 1874/75 either in Horry Co, SC or more likely in Marion Co, SC (now Florence Co, SC). Martha was born 7 Sep 1840 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, daughter of John and Ann Parker.
William and Martha lived in Pee Dee Township of Marion County, and were listed there on the 1880 census. Several of William's children were nearby. Martha's widowed mother was next door.

William died sometime between 1880 and 1900. I'm not sure why, but I have ca 1897/1900 as his probable death timeframe. I'm not sure how I came to that range. He might be buried at the Salem Cemetery in Florence Co, SC which is where his second wife is buried.
Martha Edwards was listed on the 1900 census in Florence County, in Pee Dee township. I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Martha was probably also on the 1910 census in Florence, but I don't have it yet.
Martha E. Parker Edwards died in Florence County, SC on 28 Jan 1914. She is buried at the Salem Cemetery.
William and Rachel had 10, perhaps 12 children, the 10 proven by census and other records. The two youngest (making 12 total) might be grandchildren instead.
John R. Edwards (c1871) (grandson?)
Eliza Jane Edwards (c1872) (granddaughter?)
Barnabas Edwards was born ca 1847/48 in Wayne Co, NC. He was probably named for his grandfather Barnabas Edwards. Barnabas was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Wayne Co, NC ("Barna" age 2) and with them in 1860 Horry Dist, SC "Barnabas" age 13 born NC).
For the Civil War, Barnabas Edwards enlisted on 16 May 1862 in Company C, 1st Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery as a Private. He enlisted in Brunswick Co, NC, listed as a resident of South Carolina. He was present and accounted for until August 1864.
Barnabas married Susan Ann M. Kirton ca 1867 in Horry Dist, SC. She was a daughter of Joseph P. Kirton and Mary Susan D. --- Kirton.
Sometime before 1870, Barnabas and family moved west into neighboring Marion County, moving to Rowell Township. His occupation was "Turpentine", so he may have moved there for work reasons. I don't believe there were any relatives in that area.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Rowell Township of Marion County. George B. Lane and Robert W. Sessions were living with them, and were not related as far as I know.

I was unable to locate Barnabas, Susan nor any of their children on the 1900 census. I don't know if they moved away, or if they had died. I did find their son Robert B. Edwards back in Horry for the 1910 census, and their children were born in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. Using the approximate birth dates and places, we can track the family (or Robert anyway) to Georgia by ca 1896, still there ca 1898, and still there ca 1900, and to Mississippi ca 1902 and to Alabama ca 1905, and back to Horry Co, SC by 1910. Since Robert made all these moves, could his parents and siblings also gone to one or more of those places?
If Barnabas and Susan followed Robert, they may be listed on the 1900 census in Georgia, but I have no idea where specifically.
Gabriel E. Edwards was born December 1849 in Wayne Co, NC. He was possibly named for his father's 1st cousin Gabriel Edwards (c1817).
Gabriel was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Wayne Co, NC and 1860 Horry Dist, SC.
Gabriel married Louisa Floyd ca 1868 in Horry Co, SC. She died ca 1872.
Gabriel married Celia Caroline Johnson ca 1873 in Horry Co, SC.
See their own page for additional information.
William M. Edwards was born October 1850. This is based on census analysis. His 1900 census entry shows October 1849, but that conflicts with his brother Gabriel, born December 1849. Also it does not completely agree with William's previous census entries. In 1860 he was 10 (born ca 1849/50), in 1870 he was 20 (born ca 1849/50). Both of these would work with Oct 1849 as a birth date, except he was not listed on the 1850 census with his parents, so not born yet. In 1880 he was 29 (born ca 1850/51). All combined, it seems like October 1850 is a much better fit.
He was born in Wayne Co, NC, in the Mount Olive area. He was probably named after his father. I don't know what the "M" middle initial stands for.
William was home with his parents for the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC ("William" age 10, born NC).
William M. Edwards married Cornelia L. Kirton in 1869 in Horry Co, SC. Cornelia was born 2 Feb 1853 (per tombstone) in Horry District, SC. Her parents are Stephen W. Kirton and Sarah B. --- Kirton.
William and family were listed on the 1870 census in Horry County, next door to William's brother Gabriel Edwards and just two houses from his parents. Cornelia's parents and one sibling were also living with them, as was Albert Johnson, relationship unknown. (This may be Albert P. Johnson 1855-1932, see my Horry County Johnson web pages for more).

Cornelia L. Kirton Edwards died on 19 Oct 1908 (per tombstone, and obituary) in Horry County, SC. She is buried at Zion Cemetery. Her marker says "Cornelia L., wife of W. M. Edwards Feb 2 1853 - Oct 19 1908".
I was unable to locate William Edwards on the 1910 census, but he was still alive at that time. His unmarried children were all living together in Horry that year. I wonder if William moved out of the county temporarily.
Sometime before ca 1913, William M. Edwards married again, to Maggie ---. I don't know her maiden name.
William was listed on the 1920 census in Horry County in Dog Bluff Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I have not yet checked the 1930 census for William.
William M. Edwards died on 14 Jun 1932 in Dog Bluff Township. His death certificate gave his name as "W. M. Edwards", aged 82 years 9 months, male, white, married. Born South Carolina (incorrect), father William Edwards, mother Martha Edwards (incorrect, this was his step-mother). The informant was Grady Edwards, his son. I don't know where William is buried. He could be buried at Zion next to his wife Cornelia, but he has no marker.
William and Cornelia had 10 children (per the various census records), and he and second wife Maggie had at least 3 children.
John Edwards was born 17 Jun 1853 (per Ken Edwards) in Wayne Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC ("John" age 8). I did not find him in 1870. He was not with his parents, nor did I find him listed anywhere else in Horry.
John Edwards married Charity Matilda Grainger ca 1876 in Horry Co, SC. Charity is a daughter of Hughey Grainger and Nancy ---.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Green Sea Township of Horry County. John's sister Martha was living with them.

Doctor F. Edwards was born ca 1853/54 in Wayne Co, NC. "Doctor" was his name, not his occupation. He may have been named for the family doctor, for that is often the case when you find a person named "Doctor". If I knew what his "F" middle initial stood for, perhaps I could confirm (or refute) this theory.
He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Doctor" age 6, born NC) and the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC ("Doctor" age 15, born NC).
Doctor F. Edwards married Sarah --- ca 1873 in Horry Co, SC or perhaps in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC. I don't know her maiden name.
Doctor moved to neighboring Marion County, Pee Dee Township with his parents, or after he married. He was listed there on the 1880 census next door to his brother Henry, and just 3 houses from his father.

The area they lived in became Florence County in 1880 when it was formed from several counties, including Pee Dee Township of Marion County.
I have not found Doctor F. Edwards on the 1900 or 1910 census yet.
In 1920, D. F. Edwards, 66 and wife Sally, 63 were living in Williamsburg County with a married daughter. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I'm not totally sure if that is them in Williamsburg, though the names and ages are a perfect match. My doubts come in because I also found a "Dock F. Edwards" age 65 in Columbus Co, NC, though his wife was "Mary" age 64. More research is needed to be sure which of these is Doctor F. Edwards, son of William Edwards.
James W. Edwards was born ca 1855/56 (per 1860, 1870 and 1880 census) in Wayne Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("James W." age 4, born NC) and with them in 1870 ("James W." age 14, born NC).
James married Ellen Louise Johnson ca 1875 in Horry Co, SC. She was born ca 1858/59 in Horry District, daughter of Allen Warin Johnson and Celia Floyd (who are also my ancestors, making Ellen my aunt by blood and marriage).
They were listed on the 1880 census in Horry County in Gallivants Ferry Township.

I was unable to locate them in 1900. They may have moved to Florence County where his parents had moved in the 1870's, but I've not looked for them there yet. A deed (see below) would seem to place them there in 1904.
Jim Gaskins found a deed dated 13 May 1904 where J. W. Edwards and wife E. L. Edwards sold their interest in the estate of his father William Edwards. The deed was witnessed by W. L. Edwards and Pearlie Edwards. (Florence Co, SC Deed Book S page 79)
The above deed may not prove they lived in Florence, unless it says they were residents of that county (I've not seen the actual deed). I have no additional data on them.
I don't have them in 1910 yet.
I found Ellen on the 1920 census, widowed, so apparently James W. Edwards died sometime between 1904 and 1920 in Horry County. Ellen was living in Conway Township of Horry in 1920, near several of her sons. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Henry C. Edwards was born 22 Jun 1859 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC.
He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Henry" age 2, born SC) and with them in 1870 ("Henry" age 11, born SC).
Henry married Jane P. --- ca 1875 in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC. I suspect her maiden name is Parker, but have no direct evidence of that. My main reason for thinking it is based on an 1882 deed (see below).
They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion County (now Florence County) just two houses from his parents.

Edwards (his brother Doctor Edwards). It is interesting that they deeded the land to Henry's wife and not Henry himself, or both of them. I wonder if this means she is Martha's daughter perhaps, or Martha's younger sister. Anyway it raises some questions. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book LL page 246 shared by Jim Gaskins)
I have not yet found this family on the 1900, 1910, 1920 or 1930 census, but I suspect they were in Florence County those years.
Jane died on 22 Jul 1932, and Henry on 4 Nov 1944. Both are buried at the Salem Cemetery in Florence County.
Mary Edwards was born ca 1860/61 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC ("Mary" age 9) and the 1880 census in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC ("Mary" age 15).
I have no record of Mary after 1880.
Martha M. Edwards was born ca 1862/63 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC ("Martha" age 7) and the 1880 census in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC ("Martha M. Jr" age 15). In 1880, she was also listed back in Horry with her brother John Edwards ("Martha" age 16).
I have no record of Martha after 1880.
Rachel R. Edwards was born ca 1864/65 (or 9 May 1864 per Cathy and Bill Nischan) in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC ("Rachel" age 5) and the 1880 census in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC ("Rachael R." age 11).
She was back in Horry in time to marry William Isaac Graham before ca 1894. He was born 25 Oct 1859, son of William I. and Margaret Graham. (Dates per the Nischans).
They were probably listed on the 1900 census in Horry, but I don't have that listing yet.
William Isaac Graham died on 14 Apr 1901 in Horry (Per the Nischans).
Rachel Edwards Graham married Henry M. Timmons sometime after 1901. Henry's middle name may be "Malone" or something similar.
I don't have them on the 1910 census yet.
I found Rachel and family on the 1920 census in Horry in Gallivants Ferry. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Rachel died in Horry on 18 Jan 1943. Thanks to Catherine Benton Nischan for data shared on this family, particularly the birth and death dates, and the names of Rachel's children.
John R. Edwards was born ca 1870/71 in Horry or Marion (now Florence) Co, SC. He is probably a grandson of William Edwards instead of a son (especially since he already had a son named "John").
John R. Edwards was with William for the 1880 census in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC ("John R." age 9). He was listed as "son" of William, but that could be a mistake.
I have no data on him after 1880.
I did find a John R. Roberts in Florence County in 1920 of this same age. It could be him, he was in Cains Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Eliza Jane Edwards was born ca 1871/72 in Horry or Marion (now Florence) Co, SC. She is probably a granddaughter of William Edwards instead of a daughter.
Eliza Jane Edwards was with William for the 1880 census in Marion (now Florence) Co, SC. ("Eliza Jane" age 8). She was listed as "daughter" of William, but that could be a mistake.
I have no data on her after 1880.
