Welcome to my Edwards genealogy pages. I am interested in the Edwards family that resided in Lunenburg, Halifax, Pittsylvania and Henry Co., VA in the 1700s.

Edwards was the 53rd most common surname in the United States in 2000 and 58th in 2010.

My most recent Edwards ancestor is my six times great grandmother, Martha Edwards, born ca 1763 in Halifax (now Henry) Co., VA. She married William Sams in the late 1770s probably in Henry Co., VA. They moved from Virginia to Washington Co., NC (now TN) in the early 1780s. They moved from TN to Buncombe Co., NC by 1792. They remained there perhaps a decade then moved “out west” with most of their children, residing their final years in Kentucky and Union Co., IL where both died in the 1820s.

Thomas Edwards, born ca 1720s in Virginia. He married Lucy — ca 1740s in Lunenburg Co., VA. Their section became Halifax County in 1752, and Pittsylvania County in 1767, then Henry County in 1776 where they lived until ca 1790/91 when they went “back” to Pittsylvania Co., VA where Thomas died in 1791, Lucy died sometime after 1792. Many of their children went to Oglethorpe Co., GA. I haven’t found any evidence for Lucy’s maiden name yet. One book lists her as a Wade but provides no sources for that.

Thomas Edwards, born ca 1700?, presumably in Virginia, married Martha —. He died in Lunenburg in 1751, she sometime afterward. I haven’t found Martha’s maiden name yet.

I have another Edwards line, probably not related to this one. They were in eastern NC and SC. Click here for more on them.
