The author (Marty Grant) is not related to James Evans as far as can be proven. It is possible (but not too likely) that he is related to my ancestor William Evans (c1813).

James Evans was born ca 1796/97 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina, probably Wilkes (later Ashe, now Alleghany) County.

I have not positively identified his parents, but I'd say he is either a son of Barnabas Evans (c1769) or William Evans (1770/80) and Alcy ---, as both of these men (presumed brothers) had an unknown son James' age per the early census records. Other researchers list James as a son of William, but I don't know what the proof is.

James would have been about 3 years old by the time of the 1800 census. Barnabas Evans did have one apparent son "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800) in 1800. William Evans was not found in 1800.

By 1810 James would have been about 13 years old. Both Barnabas and William Evans were in Ashe County that year and both had apparent sons aged 10-15 (born ca 1794/1800). Either of those could be James.

James would have been about 23 by the time of the 1820 census. However, I was unable to find either William Evans or Barnabas Evans in 1820.

Sometime before ca 1824, James Evans married Margaret ---, presumably in Ashe County. No marriage record was found. She was born ca 1801/02 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name. Researcher Charles B. Respass listed her as a Pugh. This may be correct, though I don't know the source for it.

For the 1830 census, James was listed in Ashe County on the next page from Barnabas and William Evans, and apparently not too far away from them.

I did not find James Evans on the 1840 census. There was a James Evans in neighboring Yancey County in 1840, but that was not the same person.

James Evans and family were "back" in Ashe County for the 1850 census. They were not listed near any other Evans families.

In 1859 Alleghany County was formed from the section of Ashe County where this family resided.

James and family were listed on the 1860 census in Alleghany County. No townships were listed, but their Post Office was listed as Elk Creek.

They were still in Alleghany for the 1870 census. Two younger children were with them and I couldn't quite make out their last names, it appeared to say "Hatcher", but I'm not sure.

I did not find James or Margaret on the 1880 census, so they may have died in the 1870's in Alleghany County.

Children of James Evans. James and Margaret had eight children as proven by the 1850 census. Back in 1830 they seemed to have had two additional daughters born ca 1825/30 who were not home in 1850. Those two are unidentified. I don't have enough data on James' children to give them their own sections. Refer to the register report below for what little I've found so far.
