The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Theophilus Evans as far as can be proven. It is possible (but not too likely) that he is related to my ancestor William Evans (c1813). I don't know when Theophilus Evans was born, but if he is the father of Barnabas (c1769) and William (1770/75) as I suspect, then he was most likely born ca 1750 or before, possibly well before then. I do not have enough data at present to narrow it down any more. I don't know where he was born, but he lived in Wilkes County, NC later on, though probably moved there from somewhere else. I have not identified his parents, nor have any clues at all. I have not yet found any records for Theophilus Evans prior to the 1780's. He married someone before ca 1769 somewhere in North Carolina or possibly in Virginia or elsewhere. Note: Some transcribed and published records list Theophilus as "Thomas" Evans and I think this is due to the abbreviations for the name "Theo" being mistakenly read as "Thos" in some cases. However it is possible there was also a "Thomas" Evans in the area, but at this point I'm not too sure. On 6 Mar 1780 it was ordered that Thomas Evans be allowed a license to keep Ordinary (sell liquor) at his dwelling house on Elk Creek. John Sutton and William McGill were his securities. Although this says "Thomas" it may actually be for Theophilus. (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1778-1788 Volumes 1 & 11 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 9 Mar 1780 it was ordered that Thomas Evans be allowed to "turn" the road by his home as long as he makes it as good as the old road now is. (I'm not sure what he was trying to do here). (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1778-1788 Volumes 1 & 11 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) Bill Simpson pointed out that a Theophilus Evans was on the 1782 tax list in Montgomery Co., VA, and also listed there in 1787, 1788 and 1792. (Bill also showed that the 1782 tax list also showed other Evans in Montgomery: Jesse, John, William, Joseph, Thomas, William and William. Perhaps some of these are related.) I was not able to find Theophilus Evans on the 1787 State census in Wilkes County. There was a "Thomas" Evans in neighboring Surry County for the state census. That could be the same person. On 10 Oct 1789 William Lenoir sold 1000 acres to Theophilus Evans in Wilkes County, North Carolina for 150 pounds, being on Little Elk Creek (present day Alleghany County). Witnessed by Enoch Osborn and William Maxwell. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B-1 page 62 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books A-1, B-1, C-1 1778-1803 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) Theophilus Evans was listed on the 1790 census in Wilkes County. He was the only Evans in that county. He had a large household. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Wilkes Co, NC pg 123 Theophilus Evans 3-2-3-0-0 Analysis: 3 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Theophilus EVANS Son? Witnessed by Elisha Baldwin, Zachariah Wells and Enoch Osborn. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B-1 page 103 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books A-1, B-1, C-1 1778-1803 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) Bill Simpson told me that Theophilus Evans was listed as a Minister at Cedar Island Church in Grayson Co., VA from 1790 to 1793. Seems likely to be the same man since Grayson was a border county. On 1 Jun 1791 Theophilus Evans and William Farmer and Wells Ward witnessed a deed between Enoch Osborn of Wythe County Virginia to William Landreth for land on Little Elk Creek. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B-1 page 146 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books A-1, B-1, C-1 1778-1803 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) Apparently Theophilus Evans was appointed to the North Carolina House of Representatives from Wilkes County in 1794. (Found this tidbit on the Wilkes County USGenWeb page). On 7 May 1794 Theophilus Evins and John Bryan qualified as Justices (in other words they were appointed Justices of the Peace for Wilkes County). (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1789-1797 Volumes III & IV by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) In May 1794 Court, Theophilus Evins and several other justices were present for the election of George Hulme as Sheriff. (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1789-1797 Volumes III & IV by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 10 May 1794 Theophilus Evans was mentioned as a Justice (along with others) to hold the "3rd Court" according to the Act of Assembly (I don't know what this means). (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1789-1797 Volumes III & IV by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) Theophilus Evans was mentioned in several Court records in the 1790's, most were of no special interest so I'm not listing them all here. On 14 May 1794 "Thomas Evans" witnessed a deed, but I think this is actually Theophilus (I've not seen the original record). The deed was between Enoch Osborn of Grayson Co, VA and John McMullen for land on Little Elk Creek. Robert Nall and Stephen Baldwin also witnessed. It is possible that this is actually a person named "Thomas", but I'm inclined to think it is actually Theophilus. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B-1 page 385 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books A-1, B-1, C-1 1778-1803 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 6 Dec 1794 Theophilus Evans received a State Land Grant for 200 acres on 3rd Fork of Elk Creek of New River. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B-1 page 475 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books A-1, B-1, C-1 1778-1803 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 30 Nov 1795 Theophilus Evans sold Jesse Reves 400 acres on Little Elk Creek, Enoch Osborns line, William Waddells line. Witnessed by William Baldwin, Samuel Phips and John Taylor. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 54 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 29 Jan 1796 Theophilus Evans sold 200 acres to Jesse Reves for 75 pounds, described as West side of William Maxwell's line, Little Elk Creek, formerly Beverly Watkins Entry. William Evans and Theophilus Evans Jr witnessed. I think they are his sons. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 100 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 30 Jan 1797 Theophilus Evans and other justices were mentioned when William Ballard Lenoir was elected Clerk. (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1789-1797 Volumes III & IV by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) In 1797 (full date not given), Theophilus Evans, Thomas Kindal and Benjamin Dugger witnessed a deed between William Farguson and John Brown for land on Elk Creek. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 296 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) In 1797 (full date not given), Theophilus Evans, William Lenoir and Thomas Kindal witnessed a deed between William Farguson and John Brown for land on Elk Creek on Julius Dugger's line. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 312 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 5 Feb 1799, George Hulme, Esq, late Sheriff (of Wilkes County, I presume) sold land to Richard Owen being land lost by Theophilus Evans in a court judgment in a case brought by Samuel Robinett), being 200 acres West side of Elk Creek, on Barnabas Evans' line, Camp Fork Elk Creek, granted to Evans 27 Dec 1797. Witnessed by Edmund Jones and William Johnson. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 781 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On the same day (5 Feb 1799), Richard Allen, Sheriff (of Wilkes County, I presume) sold land to Richard Owen being land lost by Theophilus Evans in a court judgment in a case brought by John McMillan), being 199 3/4 acres East fork of Elk Creek, granted to Evans 19 Dec 1794. Witnessed by William Lenoir and William Johnson. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 782 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) On 8 Nov 1799 Theophilus Evans was mentioned in a deed where his own property was being sold due to court judgments. Between Richard Allen, Sheriff of Wilkes County to Edmund Jones. It was from the case of John McMullen against Theophilus Evans and the case of Jesse Reaves against Theophilus Evans. Also mentioned was a balance recovered by Alexander Smith from Evans on 2 Feb 1799. The land sold was 150 acres top Peach Bottom Mountain near line of William Nall sold to Jonathan Harrison. Witnessed by Leonard Jones, Jesse Allen and Benjamin Jones. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book D page 742 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books D, F-1 & G-H 1795-1815 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.). (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com) In 1799 Ashe County was formed from Wilkes County, including the section where the Evans land was. I was unable to find Theophilus Evans on the 1800 census. His probable son Barnabas was listed in Ashe County, but I was unable to find William, Theophilus Sr or Theophilus Jr, though all were around in the late 1790's according to Wilkes County deeds. I don't know if Theophilus died or moved away somewhere. He could have just been in neighboring Virginia or Tennessee in 1800, but that census is lost for both states. The last records I have for him are the deeds dated 1799 that mention his land being sold due to court order. I have not checked Ashe County records other than the census. There is probably much more data to be found. I've found no additional data on Theophilus Evans. His probable sons Barnabas and William remained in the Ashe County area for many years and both died there. In 1859 Alleghany County was formed from the section of Ashe County where this family originally resided. Children of Theophilus Evans. Theophilus Evans and wife had a few children per the 1790 census record, but none are proven. I strongly believe that Theophilus Jr and William are his sons since they witnessed one of his deeds, and I also strongly believe that Barnabas is his son for he was a neighboring land owner. Unknown Son (bef 1774). Theophilus Evans had an apparent son this age with him in 1790, age 16+ (born before 1774). My bet is that this is Barnabas Evans (c1769). Barnabas did live on land adjoining Theophilus on Elk Creek. Other than that I have no direct evidence showing them as father and son, but it is a reasonable assumption. See his own page for more information. Unknown Son (bef 1774). Theophilus Evans had an apparent son this age with him in 1790, age 16+ (born before 1774). My bet is that this is Theophilus Evans Jr. Theophilus Jr did witness a deed of Theophilus Evans. Other than that I have no direct evidence showing them as father and son, but it is a reasonable assumption. Other than the deed I mentioned (dated 1796), I have no additional data on Theophilus Evans Jr. Records show a man of this name in Cumberland Co, NC in 1800, but I think that is someone else. In 1810 a Theophilus Evans was in Butler Co, KY, and perhaps the same one in Delaware Co, IN in 1820 and in Bartholomew Co, IN in 1830. That census shows a man born in the 1780's. I didn't find him in 1840. I have no way of knowing if this Theophilus of Kentucky and Indiana is the same person who was in Wilkes County North Carolina but I think there is a good chance they are the same person, but more research is needed to be sure or not. Special thanks to Joanne Coontz for sharing data on Theophilus Evans of KY and IN. Unknown Son (1774/90). Theophilus Evans had an apparent son this age with him in 1790, age -16 (born 1774/90). My bet is that this is William Evans (1770/80). William did witness a deed of Theophilus Evans. Other than that I have no direct evidence showing them as father and son, but it is a reasonable assumption. See his own page for more information. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). Theophilus Evans may have a daughter this age. In 1790 he had 3 females, presumably one was his wife, the other two were daughters. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). Theophilus Evans may have a daughter this age. In 1790 he had 3 females, presumably one was his wife, the other two were daughters.
