The author (Marty Grant) is not related to William Evans as far as can be proven. It is possible (but not too likely) that he is related to my ancestor William Evans (c1813). William Evans was born ca 1808/09 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina, presumably Ashe, now Alleghany County. I have not positively identified his parents, but I'd say he has to be either a son of Barnabas Evans (c1769) or William Evans (1770/80) and Alcy ---, as both of these men (presumed brothers) had an unknown son his age per the early census records. Barnabas left a Will in 1851 and did name a William Evans as an heir. Was it this William? Other researchers show this William (1809) to be a son of William (1770/80) and Alcy. Which is it? I'm not sure. William would have been about 1 year old by the time of the 1810 census. Both Barnabas and William had sons "under 10" (born ca 1800/10) that year. William would have been about 11 years old by the time of the 1820 census. However, I was unable to find either William Evans or Barnabas Evans in 1820 or any other Evans in Ashe County. Sometime in the late 1820's William Evans married Mary ---. She was born ca 1807/08 in North Carolina. I don't know her maiden name. (1835/40) –> gone by 1850 Elizabeth EVANS (1839/40) daughter William Evans and family were no longer in Ashe County for the 1850 census. I accidentally found them in Wyoming County Virginia (now West Virginia) while searching for Barnabas Evans (c1818) who also wound up there. This may indicate they were brothers, though they could be 1st cousins instead. William apparently moved to that area between ca 1842 and ca 1846. Barnabas joined him about 10 years later. They were the only Evans family in Wyoming County for the 1850 census.

Since I don't know when either event occurred, I may have some children with the wrong mother. Nancy was born ca 1821/22 (per 1860 census) also in North Carolina, though I don't know what county. William and family were listed on the 1860 census in Wyoming County. Brother Barnabas Evans was listed in the same area though not close by.
