The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Zachariah Evans as far as can be proven. It is quite possible that he is related to my ancestor William Evans (c1813) as they both lived in Macon Co., NC. Zachariah is my uncle by marriage as he married my 4th Great Grand Aunt Mary Waters. Zachariah Evans was born ca 1794/95 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). I suspect he was born in Spartanburg District, South Carolina, but have no direct proof of that as of yet. I believe that Zachariah Evans is a son of Isham Evans (1770/75) of Spartanburg Dist, SC and Haywood Co, NC. I have no direct proof of Isham being his father, but he was the bondsman for Zachariah's 1817 marriage, and he was old enough to be his father, and he did have an apparent son that age per the earlier census records. They are certainly related, even if not father and son. For the 1800 census Zachariah would have been about 5 years old, so ought to be enumerated in the "under 10" age group. Of course there were a great many Evans families listed in South Carolina in 1800, and almost all of them had at least one son that age. Narrowing it down to only Greenville, Pendleton and Spartanburg District limits the choices, but still leaves quite a few potential suspects. Of special note is Isham Evans in Spartanburg with 3 sons under age 10. There is also the the possibility that Zachariah's parents had already moved into Western NC by 1800, though I tend to think otherwise. For the 1810 census, Zachariah would have been about 15 years old, so ought to be enumerated in the 10-15 category (born ca 1794/1800), or possibly in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94), if his birth year is off slightly. As before there were lots of Evans in Upper West SC with sons in those age groups. However Isham Evans had already moved to Haywood County, North Carolina by 1810. In fact, there were two men of that name listed there in 1810. One of them had a son 10-15 and 16-25. There were several other Evans listed in Haywood County in 1810; of them only Isham and Jacob Evans (1771) had sons in the right age group to possibly be Zachariah. Jacob had 1 boy 16-25, and three 10-15, none of whom are identified. On 29 Aug 1817, Zachariah Evans obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County, NC to marry Mary Waters, daughter of Michael Waters. Isham Evans was bondsman (thus leading me to conclude that Isham was Zachariah's father, though of course he could be an uncle instead, or an older brother). Mary Waters was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census) in Mecklenburg Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census), daughter of my ancestors Michael Waters and Emelia Stewart. They were listed on the 1820 census in Haywood County. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Haywood Co, NC pg 219 Zachariah Evans 000100-20100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Zachariah EVANS (1794/95) s/o Isham 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Mary WATERS Evans (1799/1800) wife m 1817 2 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter? They either moved away or died. I suspect they died, for many of their children were still in Macon in 1870. Children of Zachariah and Mary Waters Evans. Zachariah and Mary had several children according to the various census records, most were still home in 1850, but a couple from before were not listed, so probably married or dead by then. Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Zachariah Evans had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820 (aged "under 10", born ca 1810/20), home in 1830, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20) and still home in 1840, aged 20-29 (born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then. I don't know who this could have been. There was a marriage bond for a Nicy Evans and Minor W. Collins dated 1 Jul 1840 in Macon County. This certainly could be this unknown daughter of Zachariah. I could not find them in 1850, but I did find them in 1860 Marshall Co, AL (or I think it is them), Minor Collins, 46 SC, wife Narcissa ("Nicy" is often used as a nickname), age 40 (born ca 1819/20), born SC, and their kids born SC and GA. Based on their birth places and dates I'd say this family could have been in either SC or GA in 1850. Event though her age is compatible, I get the distinct impression that Nicy (Narcissa) is not Zachariah's daughter. She may have been part of an Evans family bordering Macon County in Pickens District, SC and came into Macon to marry, or something like that. There were no other Evans marriages in the 1840's in Macon County, so I don't know who this daughter of Zachariah might have been. Mary Evans was born ca 1819/20 (per 1850 census) in Haywood County, NC (per 1850 census). She seems to have been home with her parents for the 1820 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), and still home in 1840 (aged 20-29, born ca 1810/20). She was home in 1850 ("Mary" age 30, born Haywood). She was not home in 1860, but was listed elsewhere in Macon County, listed twice in fact. Her first entry in 1860 was with David and Susan (Fouts) Younce. Susan had two sisters who married into the Waters family, so that makes them "in-laws" of sorts. Her second entry was with the Daniel and Susan (Fouts) Roper family. I would assume that Mary was staying with both families (perhaps a little time had passed between the census takers visit to each) and both listed her living with them. It is also possible that these are two different Mary Evans and not the same person listed twice, but I doubt that.

I found no marriage record for her. Reuben P. Evans was born ca 1823/24 (per 1850 census) in Haywood Co, NC. I don't have direct evidence that he is Zachariah's son, but it seems highly likely. Zachariah did have an unknown son born ca 1820/25 with him in 1830 and 1840, and Reuben was his neighbor in 1850, and he was born in Macon County at a time when Zachariah was the only Evans there. He married my ancestor Rebecca Fouts in 1849. See their own page for additional information. Samuel H. Evans was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census) or ca 1819/20 (per 1860 census) in Haywood Co, NC (per 1850 census). I don't know what his "H" middle initial stood for. He was apparently home with his parents in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). In June 1845 Macon County Court, Samuel H. Evans and others were listed as members of a road crew for Burningtown Road. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 305) In August 1847 Court, Samuel Evans was listed as being Insolvent (not having paid his taxes) in Burningtown District. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 363) He was with his parents for the 1850 census ("Samuel" age 25, born Haywood), and still home in 1860 ("Samuel H." age 40, born Haywood) I did not find Samuel in 1870 or 1880. Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Zachariah Evans had an apparent daughter this age. She was not home in 1830, but was there in 1840, aged 15-19 (born ca 1820/25) and gone by 1850. It is quite possible that this was not a daughter at all, but just someone living with them in 1840 for some reason. Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Zachariah Evans had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1830, aged "under 5", (born ca 1825/30), and home in 1840, aged 10-14 (born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then. I don't know who this might have been. Andrew Jackson Evans was born ca 1828/29 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 census). He was apparently home with his parents in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was still home in 1850 ("Jackson" age 21, born Macon). On 24 Nov 1853, Jackson Evans obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Amanda Rowland. She was born 9 Sep 1837 in Macon County, daughter of William Rowland and Jane Fouts (daughter of Jacob Fouts and Mary Margaret Baker). They were listed on the 1860 census just a few houses from his parents.

She does not seem to have been home with her parents for the 1840 census, but someone her age (who is otherwise unidentified) was with her grandmother Emelia Stewart Waters that year, and I'd bet it was her. Hannah was back home in 1850 ("Hannah" age 16, born Macon) and still home in 1860 ("Hannah", age 25, born Haywood). I did not find her in 1870, nor did I find a marriage record for her in Macon County. James A. Evans was born ca 1837/38 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Macon County, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). If his birth year is accurate, and brother George's is also accurate, then they may be twins. James seems to have been home with his parents in 1840 (aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and was home in 1850 ("James, age 12, born Macon), and home in 1860 ("James A.", age 22, born Macon). In 1870 he was still in Macon, living with William Fouts (William R. Fouts, son of James Fouts who was associated with Zachariah Evans, both related to the Waters family). He was listed as a pauper and as "Idiotic".

George Evans was born ca 1837/38 (per 1860 census) in Macon County, NC (per 1850 census). I have not found any direct proof that George was Zachariah's son, but it seems very likely. Zachariah did have a son that age (born 1835/40) with him in 1840 who was not with him in 1850. George was born in Macon, and Zachariah was the only one there at the time old enough to be his father. Also, George lived in the same vicinity as Zachariah. If his birth year is accurate, and brother James' is also accurate, then they may be twins. George was probably home with his parents in 1840 (aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40), but he was not home in 1850. At that time he would have been about 12, so couldn't be on his own somewhere, so probably living with another family as a laborer or student, but was inadvertently left off the census for some reason. He was in Macon for the 1860 census, living with the James Fouts family. James Fouts (my uncle) was associated with the Zachariah Evans family, so that is further circumstantial evidence linking George to Zachariah.

Michael Evans was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Michael" age 8), but not with them in 1860, so probably married, dead or just living elsewhere by then. I did not find Michael Evans on the 1860 census (nor on the 1880 census anywhere in the US). Zachariah Evans was born ca 1844/45 (per 1850 census) or ca 1840/41 (per 1860 census), in Macon County, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). He was obviously named for his father. Zachariah (Jr) was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Zachariah" age 5) and home in 1860 ("Zachariah" age 19). I did not find him on the 1870 census in Macon Co, NC. He may have moved away somewhere, or perhaps died due to the Civil War (1861-1865) as many men his age did. I do not have a full 1870 census index, but I found a Zachariah Evans on the 1880 census in Pettis County, Missouri. He was the same age, and born in North Carolina, but I don't know if it is the same man or not, though certainly worth noting. He had a wife and children, most of whom were born in Indiana, suggesting this family was somewhere in Indiana in 1870, and moved to Missouri during that decade.
