Thos. L. Grant
Mr. Thos. Lee Grant, Postmaster at Old Fort, died Sunday night at his home at Old Fort, suffering a stroke of paralysis from which he never regained consciousness. Mr. Grant had first been to the post office and made up the mail for no. 35 and returned home to take his family to church. While getting ready he was stricken with paralysis and died within 3 or 4 hours. His death was a shock to the community. Mr. Grant was born and reared in Rutherford County and came to McDowell in 1898. He was 51 years of age, leaves 2 brothers, W. F. and L. M. Grant; 3 sisters, Mrs. R. L. Murphy of Richmond, VA, Mrs. E. M. Davis of Marion, and Mrs. W. M. Gilbert of Chesnee, S. C.
Mr. Grant was married three times. First to Miss Mollie Burgin, second to Mrs. Lucy McCurry, and third to Miss Delia Moffitt. Six children survive: Arthur and Luther, Bulow, Myrtle, Joe, Lee and Marjorie [sicthere are seven names listed by the transcriber of the obituary]
Mr. Grant was engaged in the merchantile business in Old Fort before being appointed Postmaster. He enjoyed the highest respect and esteem of his fellowman. It is the concensus of opinion that he was one of the best officials the post office at Old Fort ever had. He was well and favorably known in McDowell Co.
The town and county have lost a good citizen Interment was made in the old family burying ground at Bethel church, five miles from Old Fort.
