!NOTES:From Ruth Hundley:
John's and Patience's Children
John, Reuben, William, Penel (probably Penelope),Coty, Milly, Sarah - who was the first wife of John G. Powers, my GG Grandfather.(Sarah died May 4, 1859,
in the home of her daughter, Sarah Ann Holly in FT. Valley, Houston County,
Ga.
Sarah and John G Powers' Children
Son, Charles, Daughter, Sarah Ann Holly (married Thomas Holly Dec. 30, 1843, Ga. Gen. Soc., R.G. 975.8515), born about 1821 in SC, Daughter, Margaret Moore (married John Moore of Ireland), Penelope Williams (married 3 or 4 times, but was married to Williams in 1873). The names are not listed in their birth order.
Sarah Turner Powers and children left SC about 1835. Others who went with her were the John Martin family, the John Barrentine family, the John Powers family
(a nephew of John G. Powers), and the William Hussey family. They first went to Barbour Co. ALA. for about a year, then to Pike Co. ALA., Stewart Co. GA, Houston Co. (pronounced How-ston) GA, Crawford Co, GA. and then back
Houston Co. GA where Sarah T Powers died in FT. Valley, GA in the home of
her daughter, Sarah Ann Powers Holly.

In 1873, Sarah's and John's son Charles was living in Ozark, Dale Co. ALA. Joel Martin, (Sarah T Powers' nephew, I think) was living in Haw Ridge, Dale Co, ALA.

The above info is taken from some old notes I had taken in the early nineties. Please check this information thoroughly against any information you have. I would like for you to share any information you may have on JGP and Sarah Turner's
ancestry with me, for I have long been interested in the John and Patience Turner line.

Some of the other information mentioned was Sarah's mother came from Roanoke, (whether from the Roanoke River in NC or the state of Virginia, I do not know); that Sarah was about 40 or 45 when she left SC in 1834 or 1835; JGP was bound to John Turner at about the age of 10 and stayed with them until he married Sarah T.; Sarah was a free woman of color, deeply stained with Negro blood, and was about the color of applesauce; Patience was said to be lighter in color than Sarah; one witness said Sarah was about the color of copper with curley black hair; another witness said Sarah Turner was half white and that John G. Powers was a white man. He was described as being "tolerably tall with black straight hair and deepset eyes.";
