Here is another Haney family group who identified themselves as Cherokee Indians in their applications to the Guion Miller Roll of Eastern Cherokee. I am especially interested in these because they list a dead son named Manuel. My 2ggf was named Emanuel, also given as Manuel in his Civil War records. His uncle, born 1785 in VA, was named Immanuel. Neither of them is the dead Manuel of these records, but all instances of the name Emanuel/Immanuel/Manuel I know of are from McMinn Co, TN. So there is at least a chance that they are related to this family group.

Can anyone here connect to this family group, and add anything to the family history they give?

Guion Miller Roll application #219, John Haney, dated 13 Sep 1906
Grouped with 219 are 238 (Alford Haney, brother of John), 12267, 16370-73
All were rejected for the usual reasons: not found on roll of 1835 or 1851, do not demonstrate descent from someone who was a party to the treaty of 1835, etc.

Typed form letter from John Haney, Nantahala, NC, dated 5 Dec 1907 to Guion Miller Commission:
"I claim my Cherokee blood through my Grand-father his name was Samey Haney. I do not know whether any of my forefathers were ever enrolled or not.
My father lived in Cherokee County, N.C. he lived in South Carolina about six months, and the rest of his life in Buncombe County, N.C. They never claimed anything but Cherokee blood so I know they were never enrolled in any other tribe."
**
Typed deposition dated 10 Jul 1908
After being duly sworn, John Haney deposes:
"My name is John Haney and I reside at Duvall, N.C. I was born in Buncombe Co, N.C. about 1847. I claim relationship to the Cherokee Indians through my father, James Haney, who was a quarter Cherokee Indian, and he claims through his father, Samuel Haney, who was a half blood Cherokee Indian. My father was born near Murphy in Cherokee County, N.C. My mother was a white woman. My grandfather, Samuel Haney, was born and raised in Cherokee Co., N.C. My father was born and raised in the Indian tribe in Cherokee Co., N.C. and we all claim Cherokee blood. I do not know whether my ancestors were enrolled. About 1851 my father lived in Buncombe Co., N.C. My grandfather died about 1850. I do not know whether any of my people, either on my fathers side or my grandfather's side, ever went west with the Indians. My father was always recognized as white with Cherokee Indian blood. My people, for as far back as I have ever heard, have always lived in Buncombe County and Cherokee County. Some of them might have gone west, but if they did I don't know. I do not know any of my uncles or aunts living at the present time. In this mountainous country families are easily separated, as the distance between us is too far to visit. We were always taught to spell our name Haney. I can remember distinctly of old people who are now dead telling me that my grandfather was a Cherokee Indian and was always recognized as such.
Subscribed and sworn to before me at Franklin, N.C. the 10th day of July, 1908.
Stanley A. Foutz
Assistant to Special Commissioner of the Court of Claims"
An unusual note appears below the text of the deposition:
"The name Ha-nee appears on the rolls. Resembles an Indian. S.A.F."
**
Typed deposition dated 10 Jul 1908
David Lundsford, age 74, deposes :
"I knew the father of John Haney. . .his name was James Haney, and he was always recognized as part Cherokee Indian. I have often heard James Haney talk about his father, Samuel Haney, and he told me that he was born and raised among the Indians in the western part of the State of North Carolina. I remember when the Indians were taken out of this country. These people were always recognized as white with Indian blood. This is all I know about the matter."
David [b. 1834] is possibly the father of Elizabeth, wife of David Haney [b. 1845, m. abt 1870]. If so, Elizabeth probably was born about 1855.

In application #238, Alford Haney (brother of John Haney #219)
Deposition by Harriet Roberts, age 69, dated in 1909. She testifies to the truth of the lineage given in the application, to the death dates of James Haney (1884, at age 80) and Caroline (1883, at age 75), of English descent. Also gives Sam NUKS as the Indian name of Samuel Haney.
Alford's application same as John's, with this note: "I have no minor children they are all dead."
