!NOTES:Christian "Crissy" Barnes was born ca 1774/84, presumably in that section of Georgetown District that later became Marion District.

Crissy, or someone her age, was with widow Ann Barnes in 1800.

On 17 Dec 1804 John Flowers made a deed to "Prissy" Barnes for 135 acres of land where "said Prissy Barns lives on". Although this says "Prissy", I'm sure it is Crissy instead. Witnesses were Samuel Gasque and Henry Flowers. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 428 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

Crissy Barnes, like her brother Elias, was listed twice on the 1810 census in Marion District. The first listing (page 86B) shows her two houses from my ancestor Osborne Lane, known to live on Buck Swamp. This is the right neighborhood for her. The next listing, on page 88, shows her just a couple of houses from her brother Elias Barnes. The listings were only different in three respects: first her name was "Christian" on one and "Creasy" on the other; second, her name was "Barnes" on one, "Barns" on the other; and third, one listing had a male her same age residing with her, the other did not.

She was listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion as "Christian Barnes" and charged with 40 cents tax.

On 3 Jun 1816, Crissy was named as administratrix of her mother's estate. (Marion Co, SC Administrations Book A page 172)

The estate records for Nancy Barnes show her estate was distributed in three parts, to Elias Barnes, to John Coleman for Tom Barnes and to Crissy Barnes. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 83 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 28 Oct 1818, Crissy ("Christon Barnes") witnessed two deeds between Gadi Crawford to James G. Crawford. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 358 and 359 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

On 8 Jan 1819, Crissy ("Chrissey Barnes, single woman") deeded 135 acres to Aaron Martin, this being the land deeded to her by John Flowers. Witnesses were Thomas Evans and Jesse Bryan(t) Jr. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H page 95 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

I didn't find Crissy listed on the 1820 census.

On 18 Nov 1820, Thomas Barnes and sister Crissy were both listed as purchasers at the estate sale of William White. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 257 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

On 20 Nov 1821 Crissy Barnes was listed among the notes owed to John Henry estate. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 14 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

Crissy Barnes died sometime between 1821 and 1826, for on 4 Apr 1826 Elias Barnes was named administrator of her estate. The Probate records did not name any heirs. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 84 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

I believe that Crissy Barnes was the mother of Joel Barnes, born ca 1803. I have no direct proof that she is his mother, but he was listed as a nephew of Elias Barnes in his Will of 1835, and Elias only had two siblings: Thomas and Crissy. Thomas never married, and neither did Crissy, but Crissy did have someone Joel's age with her for the 1810 census. It is entirely possible that Joel was a nephew of hers as well, a child of deceased brother or sister that she raised.
