Mr. Willis Sylvan Huggins, Sr. 93, died Friday March 18, 2011 at Marion Regional Hospital after an illness. Mr. Huggins was born January 18, 1918 in Mullins, a son of the late Willis S. Huggins and Annie Rogers Huggins Graham. He was a graduate of Zion High School and retired from SEE & HEAR Television in Mullins. During World War II, Mr. Huggins served overseas in the US Army in North Africa and Italy with the 178th F.A. Battalion and the 248th F.A. Battalion and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious action in combat. He belonged to the Marion National Guard before the war and his was the first guard unit called up in World War II, of which he was the last survivor. After the war, he rejoined the National Guard and retired as a 1st lieutenant. Mr. Huggins was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marion, where he was a member of Uncle Charlie's Sunday School Class. He was a member of American Leg-ion Post #5. Mr. Huggins was a Mason and a former member of Damascus Lodge #161 and later a member of Clinton Lodge #60. Mr. Huggins was first married to the late Mary Ann Smith Huggins, by whom he is survived by a son, Willis S. Huggins, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Aiken and a Step-grand-daughter, Jessica Porter Matheson. Mr. Huggins is survived by his wife, Evelyn B. Huggins of the home; a Stepdaughter, Susan James and her husband Clyde of Marion; a Step-Granddaughter, Sheila Harrelson and her husband Louis; 2 Great Granddaughters, Sidney Elizabeth Harrelson and Emma Louis Harrelson; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Huggins was pre-deceased by a brother, Dan Graham and a sister, Louise Sharpe. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 20 at First United Methodist Church in Marion, with Rev. Joe Long officiating. Burial, with Masonic rites, will follow in Spring Branch Cemetery, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Smith-Collins Funeral Home in Marion. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 307 E. Godbold St., Marion, S.C. 29571 or to the Spring Branch Cemetery Fund, c/o David Stackhouse, 213 Crepe Myrtle Ct., Marion, S.C. 29571.
