!NOTES by Bob Jordan <jorbob@webtv.net>:
Richard Jordan (b. ca.1610-20?. d. ca.1686) may have belonged to the
Thomas Jordan family of Nans. Co. VA - but there is no proof except very
circumstancial. He may have had two wives - ca. 1645 to Agnes (?) and
second to Alice (?). The will of Christopher Reynolds in 1654 mentioned
land where Richard Jordan lived. Richard was married by 1653 to Agnes
when he sold land in IofW Co. VA.
He sold 100a in 1679 to son John Jordan on Cypress Swamp in IoW -
former land of Christopher Hollyman. Richard Jordan Sr. was in Surry
Co. VA by 1677 when he witnessed the will of Phillip Hunford. He may
have returned to IofW, for in 1679, Richard Sr. of IofW sold 363a to
Moory on the NW side of the head of Lower Bay Creek and mouth of Cypress
Swamp adjoining Richard Reynolds - which had been patented to Richard 6
months earlier. In 1680, Richard posted bond with Arthur Smyth, John
Pitt, and Henry Applewaite of IofW for maintence of wife Alice.
Security was son John Jordan. This may have been when he left IofW.
It appears Richard moved to Surry Co. about 1680. In 1681, Richard
appeared on the Surry tax list with Byron Tarver. The 1682 tax list
listed Richard Lane and Katherine Durk in Rich. Sr's. household.
Richard Jr. was in separate household by 1682 in Surry.
On Mar. 1, 1681/82, probate was granted Charles Savage on the will
of Alice Jordan. On July 5, 1687, inventory of Richard Jordan's estate
was produced by Richard Jr. - witnesses Rose Byrom and Wm. Burton -
Surry Co. So Richard Sr. had at least two known sons - Richard Jr. and
John.
Richard Jordan II m. ca. 1650 Elizabeth Reynolds. His will d.
9-24-1695. Inventory recorded by Eliz. Jordan Nov. 1699 in Surry. Tax
records indicate Richard Jr. was in Surry by 1674. Children were
Richard III, Charles, Robert, and daughters Rachel, Elizabeth, Hannah,
Mary, and Sarah. Richard IIi's will 12-1749 in Surry mentioned brother
Robert and sons William,Benjamin and Joseph.
John Jordan (b. 1640-50, d. 1687 IofW) m. Jane (?). Jane Jordan
granted adm. of John's estate Oct. 1687: sons John and Solomon were
declared orphans.
This Jordan family lived in southern Surry Co. not far north of the
Surry-Sussex line (today). No connection has been found with the
George-Arthur Jordan family who lived near the James River in Surry.
