!NOTES:I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Charles Barnes family. I am very interested in him though.

Charles Barnes was born before 1755, whereabouts unknown, possibly in SC.

I strongly suspect that Charles is a brother of James Barnes (bef 1755), but I have no real proof of that.

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where he lived exactly, nor who his neighbors were. The only other Barnes in Prince George at that time was James Barnes (bef 1755), whom I suspect was James' brother.

Marion District was created in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District.

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next door to Richard Barnes, a possible son, or perhaps a younger brother.

On 27 Nov 1804, Charles Barnes witnessed a deed between William Rozer to Allen Stuart for land on Mill Branch, North east side of Little Pee Dee River. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 96 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A-E 1800-1811 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

On 29 Apr 1806, Charles Barnes was named as one of the appraisers of the estate of John Price of Bear Swamp. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book I, 1800-1811 page 102 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1809 voter list from Marion Dist, SC.

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was next door to Viney Barnes, an apparent widow, or perhaps single mother. Richard Barnes was just a few houses away.

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion Dist, SC and charged with 24 cents tax.

On 14 Nov 1811 Charles Barnes and James Barnes witnessed a deed between John Cook and Joseph Hays land on the north east side of Little Pee Dee River above the mouth of "Barns Mill Swamp". I don't know how this James Barnes is related to Charles Barnes. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 55 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe.

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1814 Marion tax list, and charged with 27 cents tax.

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived, nor who his neighbors were. Considering Charles' age, and his wife's age, all these "extra" children with them in 1820 must be grandchildren instead of their children.

!CENSUS:1820 Marion District, SC pg 55 Charles Barnes 200001-10101

1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter? (1810/20)

Charles Barnes was listed on the 1824 Marion tax list and charged with 15 cents tax.

I didn't find any record for Charles Barnes after 1824, so he probably died around then, or else moved away.
Children

Charles Barnes and his wife apparently had at least one daughter based on the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records, but unfortunately, she has not been identified. The 1820 census shows several young children, but both Charles and wife would be over 65 then, so those aren't likely their own children.

1 Unknown Daughter (c1800)

1 Unknown Daughter born ca 1794/1800. A girl "under 10" was with the family in 1800 (born ca 1790/1800). In 1810 they only had one girl with them, and she was still "under 10", so born ca 1800/10. Assuming these two entries are for the same person, she was probably born ca 1800 to fit both census records. In 1820, they had a girl age 16-25 with them, or born ca 1794/1804. This is probably the same person.

(03) James Barnes:

Notes:

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the James Barnes family. I am very interested in him though, though at present, he is my prime suspect to be the father of my ancestor Mary Barnes (wife of James Campbell).

James Barnes was born ca 1765/75, whereabouts unknown, possibly in SC.

James Barnes (c1765/75) seems to be related to Charles Barnes in some way. Perhaps he is a son of Charles.

James Barnes was not listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, though an older James Barnes was.

Marion District was created in 1798 from Georgetown District.

James Barnes was apparently married before 1800, but he did not appear on the 1800 census, at least not in Marion Dist, SC. There were several James' listed in other nearby counties, but I don't know which, if any of them, are the James under study here. (Three were in Robeson Co, NC, and two in Sumter Dist, SC).

James Barnes was not listed on the 1809 voter list from Marion Dist, SC.

James Barnes was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC. He wasn't listed very near any other Barnes families, but Elias and Crissy Barnes (children of the older James Barnes) were both on the following page. Several of James Barnes' neighbors were names I'm familiar with and it seems he was in the same neighborhood with the other Barnes.

!CENSUS:1810 Marion District, SC pg 88A Jas Barnes 20010-11110
Analysis:

1 Female(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800)
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Daughter? (1800/10)

James Barnes was not listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion Dist, SC.

On 14 Nov 1811 Charles Barnes and James Barnes witnessed a deed between John Cook and Joseph Hays land on the north east side of Little Pee Dee River above the mouth of "Barns Mill Swamp". (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 55 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

For the 1814 tax list, there were two James Barnes' listed, one as "James Barnes" and charged with 49 cents, the other as "James Barnes Jr" and charged with 14 cents. I don't know which of these is the James under study here. The use of "Jr" just means that one was younger than the other one, and does not imply any specific relationship between them.

On 15 Dec 1817, "James Barnes Sr" and "James Barnes" (and also Thomas Barnes, and David Barnes) were purchasers at the estate sale of Niel Hughes. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 372 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

For the 1820 census, there was only one James Barnes listed, and I don't know for sure if it was the same James under study here, or the other James (since two were listed in 1814). The main problem is that all of the children James had in 1810 were gone by 1820. This could indicate they all died, married, or moved away, or that the James in 1820 is a different person. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived, nor who his neighbors were.

!CENSUS:1820 Marion District, SC pg 55 James Barnes 300001-10010

1 Female(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) Wife? (1775/84)
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter? (1810/20)

James Barnes was not listed on the 1824 Marion tax list.

I didn't find any record for James Barnes after 1820, so he probably died around then, or else moved away.

Children

James Barnes and his wife apparently had at least five children per the 1810 census. The 1820 census shows four additional children (if it is the same James Barnes family).

1 Unknown Daughter (c1784/94)
2 Unknown Daughter (c1794/1800)
3 Unknown Daughter (c1800/10)
4 Unknown Son (c1800/10)
5 Unknown Son (c1800/10)
6 Unknown Son (c1810/20)
7 Unknown Son (c1810/20)
8 Unknown Son (c1810/20)
9 Unknown Daughter (c1810/20)

1 Unknown Daughter born ca 1784/94. A female this age was with James Barnes in 1810, but gone by 1820, so she probably had married or died by then. This could easily by my ancestor Mary "Molsy" Barnes born ca 1791/92 who married James Campbell in 1815. I have no proof that this is her, but so far, this is the only place she fits.

2 Unknown Daughter born ca 1794/1800. A female this age was with James Barnes in 1810, but gone by 1820, so she probably had married or died by then.

3 Unknown Daughter born ca 1800/10. A female this age was with James Barnes in 1810, but gone by 1820, so she probably had married or died by then.

4 Unknown Son born ca 1800/10. A male this age was with James Barnes in 1810, but gone by 1820, so he probably had married or died by then.

5 Unknown Son born ca 1800/10. A male this age was with James Barnes in 1810, but gone by 1820, so he probably had married or died by then.

6 Unknown Son born ca 1810/20. A male this age was with James Barnes in 1820.

7 Unknown Son born ca 1810/20. A male this age was with James Barnes in 1820.

8 Unknown Son born ca 1810/20. A male this age was with James Barnes in 1820.

9 Unknown Daughter born ca 1810/20. A female this age was with James Barnes in 1820.
