!NOTES:I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Jonathan Baker, but he could easily be related to my ancestor Jacob Baker (1760/65) who also lived in Ashe County.
Jonathan Baker was born ca 1775/80 (per census analysis). I don't know where he was born.
I don't know who Jonathan's parents were. There were several Bakers in the area who could be his father. Morris Baker was old enough to be Jonathan's father, but I don't know if he is. (I've seen other researchers list him as Morrises son, but I have no idea what proof they used.)
Jonathan Baker would probably have been home with his parents for the 1790 census and listed in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). There were ten Baker households in Wilkes County that year, and all but one of them had at least one apparent son this age, so that doesn't help to narrow down the list of possible parents.
In 1799, Ashe County was formed from the north western portion of Wilkes County, including the area were most of the Wilkes County Bakers lived.
An Ashe County deed dated 10 Jun 1815 names the heirs of John Koons and includes Jonathan Baker in the list of heirs (as well as Morris Baker). This would probably have to be this same Jonathan Baker. That means that he married Miss Koons ca 1790-1800 or thereabouts, probably in Ashe County. Unfortunately her given name was not mentioned. (Thanks to Gale Wallen for this deed reference: Ashe Co, NC Deed Book C page 478).
For the 1800 census, Jonathan Baker was listed in Ashe County along with several other Bakers. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were, nor where he was living. An "extra" male the same age as Jonathan was living with them also, perhaps a brother or brother-in-law.

Brother? (1774/84)
1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) --- KOONS Baker (1775/80) wife
2 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Daughter? (1790/1800)
Daughter? (1790/1800)
Jonathan is probably still in Ashe County for the 1810 census, but unfortunately the census taker only used initials, so there are three men named "J. Baker" listed. I think the first one is James Baker (1775/80). I can not determine which of the other two is Jonathan. Neither are perfect matches. I'll give both entries below for comparison.

Jonathan Baker did not appear to be listed on the 1815 Ashe County Tax list, so he probably did not own any land.
!DEED:10 Jun 1815 Ashe Co, NC Deed Book C page 478 shared by Gale Wallen) heirs of John Koons, all of Ashe Co., sold to David Smith fifty acres of land located on the south branch of the New River in Ashe Co., they being George Koons, Morris Baker, Absolom Bower, Daniel Miller, and Jonathan Baker;
Jonathan Baker was listed on the 1820 census in Ashe Co, NC. There were quite a few Baker families in Ashe County, NC. Unfortunately, the 1820 Ashe County census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where anyone lived, nor who their neighbors were.

Jonathan Baker was still in Ashe Co, NC for the 1830 census. Fortunately, this one was in the original order, so we can determine (more or less) where each person lived and who their neighbors were. John Baker (1783) was close by. Perhaps a younger brother.

I was unable to find Jonathan Baker on the 1840 census. He may have died in the 1830's or moved away. A widow Sally Baker (1770/80) was listed in Ashe in 1840. She could have been Jonathan's wife, but I have no evidence that she was. A widow Mary Baker was in Ashe for the 1850 census and she and her known children are a really good match, so it is quite possible that she was the Miss Koons that Jonathan married.
I have not attempted to find Jonathan Baker in 1840 in other counties or states.
Marriage Notes
!NOTES:Jonathan Baker and wife Miss Koons had lots of children per the 1800 through 1830 census records. I have not identified any of them yet.
