My email to Anne 2007-04-03:
Hi Anne,
Good to hear from you. After reading your email I did a little checking, and the 1850 census entry for James M. Baker (in Texas) does show he was born in South Carolina! I guess the family moved down there for some reason just after marriage. I can't imagine why, but it does appear they went to SC. This is assuming that James M. Baker is indeed a son of Joseph Baker and Jane McCulloch. Do you have proof of that connection?
Unfortunately the only data I have on this family is the marriage record. I don't know who Joseph's parents might have been. Looking at the 1790 census there were only three Bakers listed in Rowan: George, Harate (Horatio), and Jacob. George had no children at home, Horatio seemed to have one son born ca 1774/90. That could be Joseph if that is his age group. Jacob had 2 sons, but I think both of those were still with him in 1800.
This probably means that Joseph Baker wasn't in Rowan in 1790, but moved there after that from nearby.
Looking at the 1800 census Joseph isn't listed in Rowan or elsewhere in western NC. There is a Joseph Baker in Charleston, SC on the 1800 census. The household:
1 male age 26-44 (born ca 1755/74) = Joseph
2 males age 16-25 (ca 1774/84) = Younger brothers? or Brothers-in-law?
5 males under 10 (ca 1790-1800) = 5 sons?
1 female age 26-44 (1755/74) = Wife
2 females under 10 (1790/1800) = 2 daughters?
I don't know who the "extra" people in this household are, but possibly relatives. It looks like there were 4 slaves in the household as well.
