!FATHER:Unknown, there are several possibilities. Thomas GRANT seems to be very likely to be the father of either James or his wife Malinda, as the names of their children follow the Thomas GRANT family (Amy, Joshua, Abigail, etc.). Thomas GRANT was bondsman for the marriage of James GRANT and Malinda GRANT, but which is he the father of? It is also a possibility that this James GRANT and the Alexander GRANT of the 1840 census is one and the same person. I have no proof of this, but they are in the same age group. Alexander GRANT received land from a Millington LITTLE in 1843, while in 1853 James entered land adjoining a John and George LITTLE. This could be the same family. However, it is not conclusive. Andrew GRANT (son of William and Mary) apparently had a grandson named James whose parents had died by 1824. It could be this same person. Another possibility is that James GRANT is the same person as Morris GRANT (son of William GRANT and Sarah ELMS Grant) who was listed in the 1840 census of Rutherford Co, NC but not found after that, but seemed to still be alive in the 1870's. Morris was listed in 1854 in William GRANT's Will, and also in 1870 in Sarah ELMS Grant's Will, both times listed as "Morris" Grant. James GRANT always lived in McDowell Co, but never near the William GRANT family, but that doesn't matter. Census records indicate that Morris GRANT was born 1810/1820 (per 1840). So the ages seem to fit. Unless we can find Morris living elsewhere from 1850 to 1870, this may be our person. This could also help to explain why the two oldest children (Amy 1842/43 and Joshua 1843/44) were born prior to the marriage date of 19 Sep 1844. Of course, illegitimacy is very common in the GRANT family at this time, but Morris GRANT was married to Almira M. MARLOW on 23 Dec 1837 and she was still living as of 1840, so the first two children could be hers. This is just a theory but one that fits the available evidence;

George Searcy, her son-in-law, was informant. He didn't seem to know much. He also reported her birth place as Burke Co., NC and her father unknown, mother Mary Smith, b. Burke Co., NC.
