Windell Nichols
Windell H. Nichols, 87, of Morganton, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 at his residence.

He was born in Cherokee County on Dec. 28, 1921 to the late James Monroe Nichols and Minnie Morgan Nichols. Prior to World War II, Windell worked with the Conservation Corps and helped build Fontana Dam. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was part of the Normandy Invasion. Following his war service, Windell worked for Great Lakes Carbon until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Drexel.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death my a daughter, Elizabeth Faye Nichols; brothers, Boyd Nichols, Carrel Nichols and Ray Nichols; and a sister, Elva Postell.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Rogers Nichols, of the home; sons, James Terrell Nichols, Buddy Keith Nichols and Tony Gene Nichols; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 at Trinity Baptist Church with Revs. Scott Moneyham and Finley McCurry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
