"The Wright family is of Irish descent. The first immigrant of the Wrights in America settled in the State of KY for a period. Later the family migrated to near present Oxford, N.C., then to Surry Co. To Aran Wright was born a son by name of James."
- The above is reasonably accurate as far as can be determined. Aaron Wright did live in KY for awhile. He did go to Surry after KY (and was there before moving to KY too).
- I've found no evidence of an Oxford, NC (Granville County) connection. There were Wrights there, so perhaps they are related somehow;


!NOTES:Aaron Wright was from Ireland according to Family Tradition. However, it seems more likely he was born in North Carolina. Perhaps his parents were from Ireland instead. His son James S. Wright was listed on the 1880 and 1900 census and in both cases listed his father as being born in NC.


!NOTES:Birth ca 1765/1771 per 1810 census age 26-44 (1765/84) and his 1792 marriage bond. He had to be at least 21 to marry without parental consent. That means he was born ca 1771 or before. Those two records combine to give ca 1765/1771 as likely birth range;


!NOTES:What is Aaron Wright's relationship to David Riggs? They were listed together on three records (1785, 1792 and 1795). David's wife Miriam is allegedly a daughter of Hezekiah Wright. How does Aaron connect to that family? His birth pre-dates David and Miriam's children by just a couple of years, perhaps he is Miriam's child by a previous marriage (or out of wedlock) and David Riggs is his step-father. More evidence is needed;

!NOTES:(29 Sep 2019) When I read their 1792 marriage bond on microfilm back in the 1980's at the NC Archives, i had a very hard time making out her name.
It *appeared* to say "Mary Ryons". Therefore i concluded her surname was Ryans, Ryan or Ryon. There was a Darby Ryan in Surry at that time, so I figured she was associated with him. Later I found that her maiden name was very well proven to be Murphy. However, there is no way that's what the bond said, not even close.
Therefore I concluded she must have been married to a Mr. Ryan who died prior to her 1792 marriage to Aaron Wright. Made sense, and explained it nicely. That man might be a son of old Darby Ryan since he was the only one of that surname around at the time.
Today (Sep 2019), a fellow researcher told me she looked at the original bond and was quite certain it said Mary *Bond* instead of Mary Ryons as I had originally interpreted it. She directed me to where the bond was available online (familysearch.org), so I went to see for myself. It only took a moment to realize she was correct. It did indeed say "Bond" and not "Ryons" as I had originally thought.
So, at first glance, my theory about her being married to a Mr. Ryan, possible son of Darby Ryan, fell apart on the spot. No problem. We go where the facts and evidence lead us, right? Right.
Then i took another look at the bond. It hit me like a ton of bricks. We were reading the *back* of the bond, not the bond itself! Upon closer inspection it says "Aaron Wright's Marg. Bond" In other words, Aaron Wright's Marriage Bond! That was not his bride's name at all! It was merely the clerks' notation on the back of the bond for filing purposes, giving his name, what the document was, and the date.
The front of the bond was blank except for the signatures at the bottom. Therefore, Mary Murphy's name is not on the bond at all, not in any form.
So, in conclusion, there is now no evidence that Mary Murphy, daughter of Richard Murphy, was married to anyone prior to her marriage to Aaron Wright. If you have Mary m. to Mr. Ryan in your files, please delete that as it is wrong. It was my mistake, made long ago, but now I know it was completely in error.
