Furman Postell
Guitar player for gospel singing group Furman "Dugan" Postcal, 66, died Saturday, January 20, 2001 in District Memorial Hospital, Andrews. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, he was the son of Elva Nichols Postell of Topton and the late Hardy Postell. He was owner and operator of the Postell Concrete Construction Co., Inc. He played the guitar with the Smokie Mountain Gospel Singers for 45 years and was a member of the Red Marble Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Andrews Rescue Squad. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Wright Postell, who died June 2, 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Millsaps of Topton, a foster daughter, Jo Copeland of Edenton, North Carolina; a son, Ricky Postell of the home; a sister, Joyce Gibby of Topton; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Monday, January 22, in Red Marble Baptist Church with the Revs. Mickey Stewart and Bill Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Rocky Burrell, Sonny Reighard, Johnny Wood, Ronnie Jackson, Tony Nichols and Burton Coker. Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Douthit and Sonny Gibby. The family requests memorials be made to the Joyful Sound Recording Ministries, P.O. Box 87, Topton, North Carolina 28781. Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, was in charge of all arrangements. -January 25, 2001
