!OBIT:Wednesday, May 25, 2011 9:07 PM CDT Gene W. Trammel, 83, of the Nantahala community near Topton, died Friday, May 20, 2011, at his

residence.

He was a native and lifetime resident of Macon County. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

Gene worked for several years for Berkshire Knitting Mills and later began a career in residential home construction. He was a member of Andrews Masonic Lodge No. 529 and a Shriner.

He was a lifelong member of Briartown Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and adult Sunday school teacher. He loved working in his sawmill and woodworking shop.

He was the son of the late Sherrill Thomas and Edna Grant Trammel, and husband of the late Kate Owenby Trammel, who died Feb. 20, 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Jenkins Trammel; two sons, Rickey L. Trammel of Andrews and Ronald G. Trammel of Greer, S.C.; a sister, Hazel Roper of Andrews; a grandson, Jacob Trammel, and a granddaughter, Kati Trammel, both of Andrews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 22, in Briartown Baptist Church with the Revs. S.J. Waters and Lewis Welch officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with military graveside rites. Pallbearers were Rickey L. Trammel, Ronald G. Trammel, Jacob Trammel, Jerry Phillips, Gary Cross and Donald Cross. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Cross and David Trammel.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, where the body was until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Gene W. Trammel to Briartown Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Juanita DeWeese, 19292 Wayah Road, Aquone, NC 28781; or Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice Agency, P.O. Box 465, Hayesville, NC 28904.

Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, was in charge of all

arrangements.
