!OBITUARY:
Mr. Oliver Lee “Sonny” Mason, Jr., age 75, of Blue Ridge, formerly of Rome, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2011, at an Atlanta hospital.

Mr. Mason was born in Rome, Georgia on August 13, 1936, son of the late Oliver Lee Mason, Sr., and the late Margurite Holmes Mason. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy White Mason. Mr. Mason was a graduate of the University of Georgia and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Mr. Mason retired from the Floyd County Board of Education after 30 years of teaching and coaching. He taught at Alto Park, Coosa Middle, and Garden Lakes Elementary. He coached baseball and football at Coosa High School from 1964 until 1977. Coach Mason’s passion for sports and love of young people endured throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Myra George Mason; a son, Chris Mason, Dalton; stepchildren, Burke and Suzanne George, Charlotte, NC, Brian and Cindy George, Blue Ridge, and Carroll and Lori Chastain, Ellijay. He was adored by his grandchildren: Lindsay Godfrey, Genene and Rob Churchill, Will Godfrey, Stephanie George, Caroline Godfrey, Jessica George, Erin George, Rachel George, Mary Katherine Mason, Connor Mason, and John Myles Mason, as well as two great-grandsons, Michael Lickey and Mason Godfrey. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Janet Mason Harper, and Mrs. Teresa Mason Lingler.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at 4pm at the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Graves officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the Calvary Baptist Church on Thursday from 2pm until the service hour. At other hours, they will be at each of their respective residences.

The following gentlemen will serve as active and honorary pallbearers and are asked to assemble at the Calvary Baptist Church on Thursday at 3:30pm: Tim Martin, Jeff VanVlake, Charlie Culberson, Scott Gaylor, Todd Patrick, Chris Bragg, Barry Didrick, Joel Smith, Tim Mansour, Joseph Mansour, Donnie Spellman, Butch Allen, James Blanton, Steve Blanton, Bo Bragg, and Jeff Graves.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Coosa High School Baseball Program, c/o Coosa High School, 4454 Alabama Highway, Rome, GA 30165.

Myra George Mason, age 78, of Blue Ridge, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019 in Blue Ridge, GA. Born on September 13, 1940 in Rome, GA, she was the daughter of the late Carl Everett and Virginia Lee Barnes Thacker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Ridge. She retired from Georgia State Patrol Post#27 after 25 years of service as the Post Secretary. She served 20 years on the Fannin County Board of Equalization, under both Johnny Chastain and Dana Chastain, as Chairperson. She was also preceded in death by three husbands, Larry Adams, Bill George and Oliver Mason; and infant siblings, Carl Thacker, Jr. and Carolyn Thacker.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lori and Carroll Chastain of Ellijay, Burke and Suzanne George of Charlotte, NC, and Brian and Cindy George of Blue Ridge; grandchildren, Lindsay Godfrey of Blue Ridge, Genene (Robert) Churchill of Blue Ridge, Will (Martha) Godfrey of Gadsden, AL, Stephanie (Chris) Keeton of Charlotte, NC, Caroline Godfrey of Atlanta, Jessica (David) Long of Blue Ridge, Erin (Zach) Carver of Morganton, and Rachael George of Charlotte, NC; and great-grandchildren, Michael Lickey, Mason Godfrey, Sylas Churchill, Hudson Long, and Brant Carver; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Linda Thacker of Lindale, GA and Richard and Sherry Thacker of Griffin, GA also survive.

Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. from First Baptist Church of Blue Ridge with Dr. Tom Jordan and Rev. Bob Richardson officiating. Music was provided by Debbie Jones. Interment followed in the Chastain Memorial Park. Ronald West, Gene Cochran, Larry Williams, Tim Lowe, Mack Mason, and Ernie McArthur served as pallbearers.
