Francis Floyd was probably born ca 1750-1760. This is based on
the fact that his oldest known child was born ca 1780 and assuming he
was at least 20 when the child was born. I have no records, except the
1790 census, to base Francis' birth date on. His wife was born ca
1755/1774 per the 1800 census. I don't know who his parents were nor how
he is related to the other Floyds of Horry. Note: A pedigree chart prepared by Frances Elizabeth Small Greene and published in the Pee Dee Queue, Vol. XVII, No. 6, Nov-Dec 1993 lists this person as Francis Lewis Floyd, born 28 Mar 1756 and a son of Andrew Johnson Floyd (1726-1786), but no proof is given, nor have I yet found anything to confirm or refute any of this information. Francis Floyd married Isabel (---) before ca 1780. The aforementioned pedigree chart lists her as Isabelle S. Johnston, born 1 Jul 1763, daughter of Gilbert Johnston (Jr) and Margaret Warburton. I don't know what the proof for this is either, but Francis did name a son "Johnston" Floyd, so that makes it seem reasonable that Isabel was a Johnston. (See my Johnson pages for more on the Johnsons of Horry and Marion.) There were younger men also named Francis Floyd, but they came of age after this Francis had died so there is little room for confusion. The oldest was born ca 1790 a son of Samuel Floyd. The next oldest was born ca 1801 and is a son of this Francis, and his youngest child. See below for more on Francis (Jr). He was listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown District, though strangely there was no one in the household old enough to be Francis himself. This could be an oversight or "typo" on the part of the census taker, or perhaps Francis was actually dead already by this time, but the household was still listed in his name. If Francis wasn't dead already by the time of the 1800 census, he was certainly dead by 22 Oct 1804 for on that date his estate and heirs were named in a Horry County deed. Jessie Barfield and wife Jane, a daughter of Francis Floyd, deceased, sued Izabel Taylor, Hugh Floyd and Samuel Floyd, Administrators of the estate. The Writ of Partition is dated 22 Oct 1804. A division dated 20 Mar 1806 names the heirs as Izabel the widow and seven children: Jane, Hugh, Theophilus, Johnston, Cathrine, Izabel and Francis. (Horry Co., SC Deed Book A1, page 67 Online at: Horry County Historical Society). The above seems to show that Isabel had remarried a Mr. Taylor after the death of Francis Floyd. I don't know who her Mr. Taylor was. No one of that surname was listed in Horry on the 1810 census.

Children of Francis Floyd and Isabel Johnston.
The 1804 deed names 7 children: Jane, Hugh, Theophilus, Johnston,
Catherine, Isabel and Francis. As far as I can tell they are listed in
proper age order. Hugh was born ca 1780, and Francis ca 1801.

Jane Floyd is a proven child of Francis
and Isabel. She seems to have been born ca 1784/90 according to census
analysis. She was named before Hugh Floyd (c1780) in the estate
partition suggesting she was older than he, but census analysis suggests
she was a bit younger unless his age is wrong on the 1850 census. She may be home with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages given for females). In 1800 they had three girls at home, one born ca 1784/90 and two born ca 1790/1800. These last two are probably Catherine and Isabel, so the older one is probably Jane. Jane was named in the 1804 deed that lists Francis's heirs. She and her husband Jessie Barfield were the ones who brought the suit to initiate the estate division. Other than the 1804 deed, I've nothing concrete about Jesse Barfield and wife Jane Floyd. There are four Jesse Barfields of the approximate correct age that I've found in various census records. One of them lived in Marion District awhile, but an 1831 deed shows his wife was named Milly, not Jane. This Jesse wound up in Macon Co., GA. Is he the one who married Jane Floyd? Possibly, but no way to be sure without additional evidence. Here are a few details on the four Jesses I've found:
I'd say that Jesse (c1780), son of Barrett is a prime choice, as is Jesse (c1783) of Warren Co., MS. Those two are the more likely matches, but which of them (if either) married Jane Floyd? |
