Special thanks to Martha Miller for information shared on this
family. Hugh Floyd was born ca 1779/80 per his age on the 1850 census (70). He was born in Georgetown District, now Horry County, South Carolina, a son of Francis Floyd and Isabel Johnston. He is named as their son in Francis's estate records. Hugh appears to be with his parents for the 1790 census aged under 16 (born 1774/1790). He still seems to be home in 1800, aged 16-25 (1774/84). Hugh Floyd married someone before ca 1805 in Horry District. I haven't discovered her name yet. They are listed on the 1810 census in Horry. I don't know her given name is, nor her maiden name. They are listed on the 1840 census in Horry. He is listed as Hugh "Sr" even though he is the only Hugh listed on the census. His son wasn't quite 21 yet, but Hugh J. Children of Hugh Floyd. Two Horry County
estate records name the heirs of Hugh Floyd. One is dated 20 Nov 1854 and lists the heirs as Alfred P. Floyd, Joseph Floyd, William Floyd, Francis Floyd, Frederick Floyd, and Abraham Graham guardian to the heirs of Hugh Floyd Jr., deceased. Another estate record dated 5 Dec 1854 names the heirs as A. P. Floyd, Joseph Floyd, William Floyd, Fed Floyd, Abraham Graham and A. W. Johnson. One would assume from the listing that the male Floyds are all Hugh's sons, and that Abraham Graham and A. W. Johnson are sons-in-law. Martha Miller has done a bit of excellent analysis on this record and has concluded (rightly in my opinion) that heirs William Floyd and Frederick Floyd are sons-in-laws rather than sons. Census analysis doesn't support those two men to be Hugh's sons. I think Mrs. Miller's conclusions are correct about this. |

Delilah Floyd was born 7 Sep
1807 (date shared by Carolyn Buckley) in Horry Dist., SC. She seems to
be home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged under 10 (1800/10)
and still home in 1820 age 16-25 (1794/1804) which isn't a perfect
match, but is probably her anyway. I think her 1807 birth year might be
wrong for her 1850 census gives her age as 48 (ca 1801/02) and in 1860
she is 56 (ca 1803/04). These two entries fit well with the 1810 and
1820 census records, but not the 1807 birth date. She married Abraham J. Graham in the 1820's in Horry. He was born 8 Mar 1801, a son of William Graham and Elizabeth Bellamy (names and dates per Carolyn Buckley). Delilah Floyd Graham died on 13 Jun 1867 (per Carolyn Buckley) in Horry. Abraham was listed on the 1870 census in Horry in Green Sea Township with his second wife: Abram Graham 70, Catherine 22. They are listed on the 1880 census in Horry in Green Sea Township: Abraham Graham 79 SC-SC-SC, Catherine M. 21 SC-NC-SC. Catherine's age here (21) suggests it isn't the same Catherine from the 1870 census (who was 22 then). Abraham J. Graham died sometime between 1880 and 1900. |

Susannah Floyd was born 1 Oct
1809 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist., SC. She wasn't named as an heir in
her father Hugh Floyd's estate records but her husband Frederick Floyd
was. It was fairly common to list sons-in-law and not their wives. Susannah appears to be home with her parents in 1810, aged under 10 (1800/10) and still home in 1820, aged 10-15 (1804/10). She seems to still be home in 1830, aged 20-29 (1800/10). She married Frederick Floyd between 1830 and ca 1835. See his page for more information. |
