Lewis Floyd was born ca 1780/1784 per census analysis. His 1830
and 1840 census entries show him born ca 1780/1790. Combine that with
his 1810 entry which shows ca 1765/84 and you get ca 1780-1784. He was
probably born in Georgetown District, now Horry County, South Carolina. Lewis is a proven son of James Floyd and Elizabeth Page as named in their estate partition, or rather Lewis's children were named as he was dead by then. Lewis appears to be with his parents for the 1790 census in Georgetown District aged under 16 (ca 1774/1790). He seems to be with his parents for the 1800 census aged 16-25 (born 1774/84). Lewis Floyd married someone, name unknown, between 1800 and 1805 in Horry Dist., SC. Census analysis shows she was also born ca 1780/1784. They are listed on the 1810 census in Horry. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Horry Dist., SC pg 144/477 Lues Floyd 00010-21010-0-0

(1830/35) Lewis Floyd died in the 1840's, probably before 1845 for he wasn't listed on the tax list of that year. Others show his death in 1844, but I don't know the source for that, but it fits. I don't know when Mrs. Lewis Floyd died. She was still living in 1840, but I didn't find her on the 1850 census in Horry. She could have died in the 1840's also, or perhaps remarried to someone as yet unidentified. |
Children of Lewis Floyd. The partition of
the estate of James Floyd and Elizabeth Page lists the heirs of Lewis
Floyd as of the early 1850's. The list is a little confusing in some
places: Mary Newsom ~~~~~~I. Floyd & wife Sarah Ann out S James L. C. Floyd Lewis H. Floyd A. J. Floyd Silvester Jolly & Wife Washington Blackwell & wife out S Ann Floyd wife of Brysell Floyd & child Celia Jane Floyd Whenever a wife is mentioned it is usually she who is the heir even though her name sometimes isn't given. That means that Sarah Ann wife of ??? Floyd is probably Lewis's child and she married another Floyd. That also means that Ann Floyd wife of Brysell? Floyd is probably Lewis's daughter. I have managed to find most of these on various census records but some of the daughters approximate birth dates overlap and are hard to reconcile with the earlier Lewis Floyd census entries. There are also a few other apparent children in the early census records who aren't mentioned in the estate. They may have died young or not been Lewis's children. |
Mary Floyd was born ca
1804/05 per her age on the 1850 census (45). She was named in the estate
partition of her grandparents James and Elizabeth Floyd. Mary seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged under 10 (1800/10), and still home in 1820, aged 10-15 (1804/10), and still home in 1830, aged 20-29 (1800/10). She married a Mr. Newsom before 1840. The only one of that surname in the area was James E. Newsom. He was from neighboring Marion District where there were several Newsoms. His first wife was named Rachel P. (as of 1831, proven by Marion Co., SC Deed Book O, page 17). They are listed on the 1840 census in Horry next to her brother Jackson Floyd and two houses from Sylvester Jolly, her brother-in-law. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Horry Dist., SC pg 326 James E. Newsom apparently died in the 1840's for he wasn't listed on the 1850 census with Mary and the children: Mary Newsom 45, James H. 10, Mary S.L. 8, Patience A. C. 6, E. A. M. 4 (female). I wasn't able to find Mary or her children on the 1860 census. |
Unknown Daughter (1800/10) Lewis Floyd had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1810 census, aged under 10 (1800/10). She was gone by 1820. |
Sarah Ann Floyd was probably born ca 1810/20 assuming she was the daughter with Lewis in 1820 aged under 10 (1810/20), but gone from his household by 1830. Sarah Ann was named in the estate record of James & Elizabeth Floyd, her grandparents, as the wife of another Floyd but his name was marked out. He is probably one of her own 1st cousins (or more distant), but I don't know which one. |
James L. C. Floyd (c1814) was named in the estate partition for his grandparents James and Elizabeth Floyd. He moved to Pike Co., AL. See his own page for more information. |
Lewis H. Floyd (1814) was named in the estate partition for his grandparents James and Elizabeth Floyd. See his own page for more information. |
Andrew Jackson Floyd (c1816) was named in the estate partition for his grandparents James and Elizabeth Floyd. See his own page for more information. |
Nancy Floyd **** Note: Nancy was Sylvester's second wife, maiden name Suggs. His
first wife was Elizabeth Floyd who died before 1850. Thus there are some mistakes in the analysis below. This page needs much revision. ****
Nancy was probably born
ca 1810/15 in Horry (though her 1850 census entry shows her birth place
as NC). Her 1850 census entry gives her age as 25 (born ca 1824/25),
which doesn't match her 1840 entry which puts her in her 20's or born ca
1810/20. I narrow it down further by census analysis of the daughters in
Lewis Floyd's household in 1820 and 1830. Nancy seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census, aged under 10 (1810/20), and still home in 1830, aged 15-19 (1810/15). She married Sylvester S. Jolly before ca 1837 in Horry. He was born ca 1817/18 in SC. I don't know who his parents were. They are listed on the 1840 census in Horry. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Horry Dist., SC pg 326 Silvester Jolly 0000100000000-2000100000000

Floyd: S. S. Jolly 32, Nancy 25, Louisa 13, Eliza 11, Hugh J. 9, Lewis F. 7, R. K. 5 (male), Jesse F. Suggs, 3. All were born in SC except Nancy listed as born in NC. I was unable to find the family on the 1860 census in Horry or elsewhere. I found their son Hugh Jolly in neighboring Columbus Co., NC living with the Blackwells (see Eliza Floyd below). I found Sylvester in Horry in 1870 but he was widowed by this time: Green Sea Township, Silvester Jolly 53, Martha 18, Helan 17, Caroline 16, Joseph 15, Mary 14, Anna J. 13, William 12, Daniel 11 and Samuel 5. If we assume all those children are Nancys then she died between ca 1865 and 1870. Sylvester S. Jolly married Lucretia (---) after 1870. They are listed on the 1880 census in Horry, Floyds Township: Sylvester S. Jollie 61 SC-NC-SC, Lucretia 63 wife, NC-NC-NC, Martha 26 daughter, Caroline 23 dau, Mary 21 dau, William E. 19 son, Ann Jane 18 (listed as male and a son), Daniel R. 16 son, Samuel 14 son, Lizzie 7 granddaughter. All children and grandchildren born SC-SC-SC. |
Eliza Floyd was born ca 1817/18
in Horry. This is based on her ages on the 1860 and 1880 census. Eliza seems to be home with her parents in 1820, aged under 10 (born ca 1810/20) and in 1830 aged 10-14 (ca 1815/20). She appears to still be home in 1840, aged 20-29 (1810/20). Eliza married Washington Blackwell between 1840 and ca 1842. He was born ca 1799/1800 (per age on 1850 census) in Bladen Co., NC (proven by 1860 census). I don't know who his parents were. They are listed on the 1850 census in Horry: Washington Blackwell* 50, Eliza 26, Lewis 7, Sara A. 3, E. J. 3 (fem), W. H. 2 (male), Daniel P. 1. The surname is indexed as "Blackhill" and the original record may actually say "Blacktell" but it is hard to say. It certainly should say Blackwell. They were in neighboring Columbus Co., NC for the 1860 census living with another family, relationship unknown: Nathan J. Thompson 24, Emma 23, James P. 1, Washington Blackwell, 70, Eliza 42, Lewis 18, Sarah A. 15, Elizabeth J. 14 Henry 12, D. P. 10 (male), Jenny 8, George 5, Wash 3, Hugh Jolly 20. Everyone is listed as being born in "NC" except Washington Blackwell's who is listed as "Bladen Co NC" as his birth place. Note that nephew Hugh Jolly is residing with them. They were next door to George Blackwell 45, also born in Bladen. He could be a younger brother of Washington or a nephew. They were on the 1870 census in Columbus County in Fair Bluff Township: Wash Blackwell 67, Eliza 55, Virginia 17, Mary 13, George 15, James W. 12, Sallie 7, Trumcil? 16 male, Sallie 13. All were listed as born in "N.C." They are on the 1880 census in Columbus, still in Fair Bluff: Wash. Blackwell 79 NC-NC-NC, Eliza 62 wife SC-SC-SC, Mary E. 23 daughter SC-NC-SC, James 22 son SC-NC-SC, Sallie F. 13 dau NC-NC-SC, Virginia 29 dau SC-NC-SC, Mary 15 niece SC-NC-SC, Fannie V., 13 G-daughter NC-SC-SC, Geo. W. 6 G-son NC-SC-SC. I didn't find Washington or Eliza on the 1900 census. They were probably both dead by then. |
Ann Floyd was probably
born ca 1820/25 based on census analysis. She seems to be with her parents for the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/25) and still home in 1840, aged 15-19 (1820/25). According to the ca 1850 estate partition she was married to someone named Brysell Floyd, or perhaps "Burrell" Floyd. The record read: "out S Ann Floyd wife of Brysell & child." The "& child" could mean that Ann was dead by then for no one else was listed that way on this record. It is also possible that both parents were dead. The notation "out S" means they were out of state at the time the record was made. I attempted to find Ann and Brysell [Burrell?] Floyd on the 1850 and 1860 census but I found no likely matches. My guess is that "Brysell" or Burrell or whatever is Mr. Floyd's middle name and he isn't listed on any other records that way. |
Celia Jane Floyd was born
ca 1824/25 per age of 25 on the 1850 census. She was seemingly home with
her parents for the 1830 census, aged under 5 (born ca 1825/30), and
still home in 1840, aged 10-14 (1825/30).
By 1850 she was living on her own with two apparent children in Horry. If they are hers she was either a single mother or had married another Floyd who died before the census. She is next door to her sister Eliza Blackwell: Celia J. Floyed 25, Kashren? 4 male, Samuel 2. I wasn't able to find Celia or any of her children on the 1860 census in Horry or elsewhere. There is a family on the 1870 census who may be the same one: Horry, Green Sea Township: Sealy J. Floyd 40, Allen 17. I'm not sure if this is the same person or not, but it is notable that although Allen is listed as just 17 here (born ca 1852/53), his tombstone gives his birth date as 21 Apr 1849. If accurate he should be on the 1850 census, but he isn't. I wasn't able to find Celia on the 1880 census. I have a feeling the Celia of 1870 is the same one from 1850, but I'm not totally sure. |
Unknown Son (1820/25) Lewis Floyd had an apparent son this age with him on the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (1820/25) and the 1840 census, aged 15-19 (1820/25). He wasn't named in the estate partition so he must have died before 1850. |
Unknown Daughter (1830/35) Lewis Floyd had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/35). She wasn't mentioned on the ca 1850 partition so she may have died before then. |
