[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am not related to Nicholas George as far as I know, but I am very interested in this family.
Note: The Nicholas George family is documented (somewhat, but not in great detail) in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. The book is primarily about the Col. John George family, but Nicholas is included as are many other Virginia George families.
Nicholas George is often said to be a brother of my ancestor Col. John George, but I have not seen any real proof that they were brothers. I do think they are related, but if not brothers, then at least cousins. Nicholas George was born in England, and came to Virginia by 1638 when he patented land in Isle of Wight Co, VA. In 1652 he patented land in Charles City Co, VA. He went to Lancaster Co, VA ca 1653 or so. This is probably the largest George family in VA, and perhaps the entire southern United States. Fortunately this family is also fairly well documented, at least for the first several generations.
Most of my data on this family was given to me (originally) by Joe George (who isn't researching anymore). Since then I have done a small amount of original research on this line, but most of what I have came from Joe and from other researchers. Thanks to Barbara George and Morris George for additional data shared on this family.
Nicholas George was born before ca 1617, most likely in England. He was in Isle of Wight Co, VA by 1638, and based on several records, was associated with my ancestor Col. John George. If they were not brothers, at the very least, they knew each other.
On 20 Feb 1638, Nicholas George, with John Grymsditch, received a 300 acre patent of land in Isle of Wight Co, VA, on Pagan Creek. 200 acres to Nicholas due to transportation of 4 persons, and 100 acres to Grymsditch for transporting himself and his wife. (Virginia Patents Book 1 page 633).
The records for Nicholas are scarce for the next 14 years.
On 15 Feb 1652, Nicholas George received a patent for 700 acres in Charles City County, VA on the North side of the Rappahanock River and east side of the west branch of the Corotoman River. 300 acres by rights of previous patent dated 20 Feb 1638, surrendered by himself, and 400 acres for transportation of 8 persons (including Nicholas George and Margaret George, his wife). (Virginia Patents Book 3 page 153).
If I understand it correctly, the above record shows that Nicholas surrendered his previous 300 acre patent in favor of this new one in Charles City Co, VA.
This record also shows that Nicholas George's wife Margaret, didn't come to Virginia until 1652. Of course, she may have been in Virginia prior to that, and returned home to England for awhile. The 14 year gap in records between Nicholas 1st patent in 1638 and this one in 1652 may show that he also was back in England during those years, or perhaps not. A researcher told me that a marriage record exists for Nicholas George and Margaret Saward dated 1 Nov 1621 in Writtle, Essex Co, England. I have not seen this record myself, so can't say exactly what the source is. It should be noted that Writtle is the same place that Col. John George is from, thus lending more proof to the theory that he and Nicholas are brothers, or closely related.
On 14 Aug 1652, Nicholas George, with Thomas Taberer (who witnessed the Will of Col. John George in 1679) and Humphrey Clark received a 900 acre patent of land in Charles City Co, VA. This was for the transportation of 18 persons to Virginia. (Virginia Patents Book 3 page 205).
On 24 Jan 1653, Captain Francis Pott received a 1000 acre patent in Northampton Co, VA for transport of 20 persons, among whom were a John George and Nicholas George. This could be Nicholas George II coming over after his parents, and if so, I don't know who John George was. This might also be Col. John George and Nicholas I returning from a trip to England. There is no way to be completely sure who they were. (Virginia Patents Book 3 page 49).
Though Nicholas George owned land in Charles City
Co, VA, he seemed to live in Isle of Wight County, for on 12 May 1655, in Isle
of Wight Co, VA, John Nicholas, of Corotoman River in Rapahanock County,
appointed his friend WIlliam Denbright as attorney to demand of Nicholas George,
planter, of Isle of Wight, assurance of 1/2 of patent of 700 acres due to him.
(Isle of Wight Co, VA Record Book A)
Sometime around 1655 or so, Nicholas George and family moved to Lancaster Co,
VA.
On 27 May 1657, Nicholas George and his wife Margaret, and their son Nicholas George Jr, acknowledged their sale of land to Frances Ayres in Isle of Wight Co, VA, being part of the patent to him, Thomas Taberer and Humphrey Clarke. (Lancaster Co, VA Record Book 2 page 123)
On a Lancaster Co, VA Tax list dated 30 Nov 1659, Nich. George Sen was listed.
Nicholas George Sr made his Will around 1661 or earlier. No date was given, but the Will was proven 8 May 1661 in Lancaster Court. Here is a transcript of a portion of the Will as given by John Frederick Dorman in his 1969 document on the Nicholas George family, he cites his source as Loose Wills at the Virginia Archives:
My wife may enjoy the lands I now live on her life time, only my sonne Nicholas George may have land upon the devident to make a plantation on if he will.
My daughter Grace George may have a parsell of land one the other side the River adjoyninge upon the land of John Edwards upon the line of marked trees before Nicholas Hale's last survey.
.... My wife may have my man servant Absolam Ware if and she give unto daughter Grace 1000 pounds of tobacco to by her a bed.
One Chest to my wife.
Three basons and two dishes and two apeese to my three children.
....
Signed Nicholas (X) George
Witnesses: John Sharpe, Henry (H) Davis
The court minutes for 8 May 1661 show that administration was granted to Margaret George the widow and Nich George Jun. (Lancaster Co, VA Order Book 1656-66 page 143)
Nicholas George and Margaret, his wife, had three children, as proven by the Will of Nicholas George. He mentions only two of them by name (Nicholas and Grace), but another document a few years later proves the other daughter (Sarah).
Nicholas George (II) (c1640-1700)
Nicholas George (II) was born ca 1640 or earlier, either in Isle of Wight Co, VA or in England.
Nicholas George II (he never used the suffix "II", but I'm going to refer to him that way to distinguish from his father) was named in his father's Will (1661). He left a few records in Lancaster Co, VA and left a Will in 1699/1700.
Nicholas George (II) was appointed a constable on 9 Mar 1663/64 in Lancaster Co, VA. (Lancaster Co, VA Order Book 1656-66 page 272).
I have not done much research on Nicholas II (nor on his descendants), but he did leave a Will dated 9 Mar 1699/1700 in Lancaster Co, VA. In the Will, he names son Benjamin George, daughter Ruth, my three sons in law (names not given), son Nicholas, two sons Elmor and William George. Loving wife Elizabeth George.
He deserves his own page, and I'll do one for him later on.
Grace George was born either in Isle of Wight Co, VA or in England. I have her born ca 1642, but that is an arbitrary date with nothing to back it up.
Grace George was named in her father's Will (1661) as daughter Grace George, indicating she was single then.
Joseph T. George shared data with me showing that Grace married John Arnold after 1661 in Lancaster. She married 2nd to Thomas Sampson. Grace died around 1722. I don't have much data on either of her families yet.
Sarah George was born either in Isle of Wight Co, VA or in England. I have her born ca 1644, but that is an arbitrary date with nothing to back it up.
Sarah George was not mentioned by name in her father's Will (1661), but on 26 Jan 1662/63 in a court order, Sarah George was listed as a child of Nicholas and Margaret George. (Lancaster Co, VA Order Book 1656-66 page 209).
Sometime later, Sarah married Richard Marshall, presumably in Lancaster Co, VA.
