A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Charity Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in her though.

Charity Grant was listed on the 1810 census in Wayne Co, NC and this is the only record we have for this person. I'm almost completely convinced that this was actually a listing for Elisha Grant who was missing in 1810. The Elisha Grant family as it should be (more or less) in 1810 matched fairly well (but not perfectly) with the listing for Charity Grant. Since "Charity" is a female name, you would assume the listing was for a widow, but the listing included a male age 45+ (born before 1765) and the oldest female was age 26-44 (born ca 1765/1784). Whoever this was, she was in the Walnut Creek vicinity, as the neighbors were all familiar names of that region, including Michael Grant and Henry Hopson (my ancestor) and numerous other names associated with the Grant family there.

1810 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1810 Wayne County, NC pg 250 Charity Grant 10001-10010
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 45 and up (bef 1765)
1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810)
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784)
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810)

I have a theory, entirely speculative, that Charity was the name of Elisha Grant's wife, and for some reason she was listed as head of household, instead of him, even though he was at home (apparently). Either that or this was just a census taker's mistake. Michael Grant, listed three houses away from them in 1810, was listed as "Micajah" Grant, when all other records for him were as "Michael". Two oddities on the same census in the same area. Makes me think the census taker messed up.

I haven't exhausted all Wayne Co, NC records yet, so something on a Charity Grant may turn up that destroys my theory that this is really Elisha Grant's family.
