I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Elizabeth Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in her though.
Elizabeth Grant was born ca 1847/48 in South Carolina (county unknown). Her 1850 census record showed her race as "Black". She was listed on the Free schedule, so she was not a slave.
I don't know who her parents were, but for the 1850 census she was living with the Simon Hayes family, all of whom were listed with race of "M" (Mulatto). This indicates they were of some mixed race, possibly Indian, Black or something else. Without further evidence, there is no way to be sure what their ethnic origin is. Read my general commentary on Ethnic Origins for more information. Elizabeth's being listed as "Black" though usually denotes African origin, but not always.

Since Elizabeth was born in SC, and Mary Hayes (apparent wife of Simon) was also born there, then that may signify that Elizabeth is a daughter of Mary, but that is just a guess on my part.
I didn't find Elizabeth Grant in 1860, nor the Simon Hayes family.
