I (Marty Grant) am not related to Hezekiah Grant as far as I know. I am very interested in his family though.

Special thanks to Darla Grant and Dorothy Roberts for data shared on this family.

Hezekiah Grant was born ca 1770/80 (based on his age on the 1830 census). There were two other adult males in his 1830 census household, besides the one born 1770/80, there was one born ca 1790/1800 and one born ca 1800/10. It is entirely possible that he was one of those other two and not the oldest person in the household. He was born in VA based on the census entries of some of his children (1880 and later census showed birth place of parents). (Thanks to Dorothy Roberts for the VA Birth place). I don't know where he was born in VA, nor who his parents might have been.

Though Hezekiah was old enough by 1800 to be listed on a census, I didn't find him anywhere. It is likely he was still home with his parents at that time, and probably in VA. I didn't find him on the 1810 census either, though he would have been in his 30s by then. It should be noted that the 1800 and 1810 census for VA is incomplete with the majority of 1800 being lost, and about half of 1810 being lost.

Hezekiah Grant married Sarah Pickett sometime before 1812, presumably somewhere in NC. Their oldest child was born ca 1812 and in NC.

Apparently they were in Duplin Co, NC already by this time for Hezekiah Grant served in the War of 1812 from Duplin County (per Sarah's widows pension application).

I did not find them listed on the 1820 census in Duplin County, NC nor elsewhere in the state. They may have been residing with another family under another head of household.

On 9 Dec 1826 Hezekiah Grant was named in the Will of Howel Hunter in Duplin Co, NC. Hezekiah was included in a list of "friends" of Hunter, so no relationship is implied. Many others were named as well, including a Frederick "Picketh", possibly a relative of Sarah Pickett, Hezekiah's wife. (Duplin Co, NC Will Book 6A page 204).

On 5 May 1829 Sarah Grant witnessed the Will of Dawson Pickett in Duplin Co, NC. She wasn't named in the Will, but I'd imagine that Dawson was a relative of hers. The other witness was Hezekiah Parke. (Duplin Co, NC Will Book 9A page 383).

Hezekiah Grant was listed on the 1830 census in Duplin Co, NC.

Hezekiah Grant was listed on the 1834 tax list for Duplin Co, NC. He was listed with no land, and zero taxable polls, meaning that he had no slaves, no children (with him) over 16, and that he himself wasn't taxable for some reason.

Hezekiah Grant died in 1836 per Dorothy Roberts (I believe this date comes from Sarah's widows pension application for his War of 1812 service). I don't know where he died, but it is assumed Duplin County.

Hezekiah's widow Sarah was listed as head of household for the 1840 census in Duplin Co, NC. By 1840 Eli and Wilson, their two oldest sons, had moved to Pike Co, AL.

Sarah Grant was still in Duplin County, NC for the 1850 census, and listed in the southern part of the county. She had some of her younger children and several other people living with her, who might be relatives.

By 1860 there was no trace of this family left in Duplin Co, NC. I'm told that they all moved to Pike Co, AL. I haven't followed up on that, but since some were already there prior to 1850, then it makes sense for the rest to follow.

Children

Hezekiah and Sarah had 10 children. Thanks to Darla Grant for sharing their names with me. Some are proven by the 1850 census. I don't know the proof for the rest.

Wilson Grant (c1812)

Eli Grant (c1815)

James William Grant (c1825)

Hugh Grant

Hezekiah Grant (c1827)

Mary Grant

Ellen Grant

Henry Howard Grant (c1829)

Peola F. Grant (c1831)

Ann Jane Grant

Wilson Grant was born ca 1811/12 in NC, presumably in Duplin County. I don't know what the proof is that Wilson is a son of Hezekiah, but Darla Grant tells me that he belongs in this family, and he does seem to fit.

He moved from Duplin Co, NC to Pike Co, AL in the mid 1830's, and married Ann --- there ca 1836.

Wilson Grant was listed on the 1840 census in Pike Co, AL on page 393. I don't have the enumerations yet. This was the same page as his brother Eli Grant.

Wilson Grant and family were still in Pike Co, AL for the 1850 census, and listed in household # 369. ** I don't have this record typed up yet.

The 1860 census index shows Wilson Grant still in Pike Co, AL page 50. He is also listed on the 1860 slave schedule, so apparently he was a slave owner.

Eli Grant was born ca 1814/15 in NC, presumably in Duplin County. I don't know if there is any solid proof that Eli is a son of Hezekiah, but it does seem highly likely. He was in Duplin County, and Darla Grant lists him as a child of Hezekiah as well.

On 12 May 1832 Eli Grant witnessed the Will of William McCanne in Duplin County, NC. Hugh Pickett was the other witness, and probably a relative. (Duplin Co, NC Will Book 1 page 30).

He moved from Duplin Co, NC to Pike Co, AL sometime after 1832, apparently with his brother Wilson Grant, or shortly afterwards.

Eli Grant was listed on the 1840 census in Pike Co, AL on page 393. I don't have the enumerations yet. This was the same page as his brother Wilson Grant.

Eli Grant married Mary --- at some point prior to 1845.

Eli Grant left Pike Co, AL sometime before 1850 for he was found on the the 1850 census in Union Co, Arkansas in Jackson Township in household # 740. ** I don't have this record typed up yet.

The 1860 census index shows Eli Grant in Calhoun Co, Arkansas (pg 647). I'm not sure if this is the same person or not, but it could be.

James William Grant was born ca 1825, presumably in Duplin Co, NC. Thanks to Darla Grant for his name and birth year. I have no additional data on him yet.

Hugh Grant was presumably born in Duplin Co, NC. Thanks to Darla Grant for his name. I have no additional data on him yet.

Hezekiah Grant was born ca 1826/27 in Duplin Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, and apparently with his widowed mother in 1840. He was with his widowed mother in Duplin Co, NC for the 1850 census. I have no additional information on him. He presumably went to AL with his mother after 1850.

Mary Grant was presumably born in Duplin Co, NC. Thanks to Darla Grant for her name. I have no additional data on her yet.

Ellen Grant was presumably born in Duplin Co, NC. Thanks to Darla Grant for her name. I have no additional data on her yet.

Henry Howard Grant was born ca 1829/29 in Duplin Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, and apparently with his widowed mother in 1840. He was with his widowed mother in Duplin Co, NC for the 1850 census. I have no additional information on him. He presumably went to AL with his mother after 1850.

Peola F. Grant was born ca 1830/31 in Duplin Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, and apparently with his widowed mother in 1840. He was with his widowed mother in Duplin Co, NC for the 1850 census. I have no additional information on him. He presumably went to AL with his mother after 1850. According to Dorothy Roberts, he later moved to TX.

Ann Jane Grant was presumably born in Duplin Co, NC. Thanks to Darla Grant for her name. I have no additional data on her yet.
