A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the James B. Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

James B. Grant was born ca 1800/10 presumably in Northampton Co, NC. I don't know who his parents might have been. There are several possibilities.

According to Evelyn McAlister, James' middle name was "Brewer".

James obtained a marriage bond to marry Mary Spivey on 11 Jan 1827 in Northampton Co, NC. They were listed on the 1830 census in Northampton near Hillary Grant who could be his brother.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

On the 1840 census, James was again in Northampton Co, NC. The nearest Grant was once again Hillary Grant, but this time he wasn't that close by (three pages away).

Mary was still in Northampton Co, NC for the 1860 census. She had her youngest son still with her, but all of her other children had gone. Residing with her was Joseph Copeland and his wife Susan A. Grant (married 6 Feb 1855) suggesting that Susan was a daughter of Mary, though she wasn't with her in 1850 census (unless the one listed as "Sarah" was her).

Some of James B. Grant and Mary Spivey's children are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census.

Lavina Grant was born ca 1829/30 in Northampton Co, NC. She was home with her mother in 1850. By 1860 she was either married or dead. A "Lavenia Grant" married Noah Futrell on 21 Mar 1851, that is probably her.

Stephen Grant was born ca 1830/31 in Northampton Co, NC. He was home with his mother in 1850. I didn't find him in 1860.

Sarah Grant was born ca 1832/33 in Northampton Co, NC. She was home with her mother in 1850. By 1860 she was either married or dead. There were two marriages for a Sarah Grant in the 1850's, one of them may be this same Sarah. "Sarah Grant" married Lemuel Draper 9 Dec 1852 and "Sarah A. Grant" married William Lassiter 24 Dec 1855. I don't know which, if either, of these is this Sarah.

Susan A. Grant was born ca 1834/35 in Northampton Co, NC. She wasn't listed in 1850 with her mother (unless she was "Sarah" listed above). Joseph Copeland obtained a marriage bond on 6 Feb 1855 in Northampton Co, NC to marry "Susan Grant". They were listed with her apparent mother Mary in 1860.

James Grant was born ca 1834/35 in Northampton Co, NC. He was at home with his mother in 1850. I didn't find him in 1860.

Edmund Grant was born ca 1839/40 in Northampton Co, NC. He was at home with his mother in 1850. I didn't find him in 1860.

Adbriel Grant was born ca 1842/43 in Northampton Co, NC. He was at home with his mother in 1850 and in 1860.
