A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the James Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

James Grant was born ca 1817/18 in NC, presumably in Onslow Co, NC. I don't know who his parents were. There were several Grant's in Onslow Co, NC that could be his parents. I don't have any strong leads yet though.

James Grant married before 1850 (presumably in Onslow Co, NC) to Kissiah ---. In 1850 a Nancy Stephens age 50 (born ca 1799/1800) was with them. That could be Kissiah's mother, but without other evidence there is no way to know.

They were in Stump Sound District of Onslow Co, NC for the 1850 census. This is the same area where the other Grants had lived.

(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

By 1860 James and Kissiah had moved to New Hanover Co, NC and were listed there in Sandy Run District. They were the only Grant's in that district, though many of the other Onslow County Grant families were also in New Hanover County at that time.

James Grant had considerable property in 1860, so their may be deed records for him in New Hanover County. I haven't checked on that yet.

Sandy Run District of New Hanover County was the region that bordered Onslow County, and was one of the sections of New Hanover that later became Pender County (in 1875).
